Just a quick question for you dv2500t users on Vista: is your fan constantly on, even when no applications are running?
My system is relatively clean (clean install, optimized, extremely lean amount of programs running in the background... no AV, search disabled, all the usual) and when Vista is purely idling, the laptop fan is on.
(Maybe this is normal on this system; or maybe it's Vista's overall resource usage. I came from an HP zt3000 running XP where the only time the fans came on were during heavy usage, otherwise it was silent.)
[Edit: I'm running a dedicated gpu, nvidia 8400M GS]

i can say that the mine always has a fan on, (has dedicated gpu though, not sure about x3100 models.

Over the past month and a half I had the misfortune/stupidity to buy and return a total of 6 2500t's (All Lemons, bad run at the factory I guess) from Best Buy.
Some of them would run the fans more than others. At one time I had 2 running side by side and one was consistently 5 degrees warmer than the other. Once the "warmer" one was on for a while, the fan would run almost constantly, even at idle.
Poor quality control when placing the heatsink I guess. Which doesn't surprise me judging from all the bad luck I had, and the variety of problems, (stuck pixels, bad touchpad, even a bluescreen on one).
You might want to ask around about the luck some have had with arctic silver. -
The fan on my dv2500 is not constantly on when it is idle, its on when the cpu is under load (cpu temp > 55C),the speed at which the fan runs also changes (low to loud sound) depending on load and cpu temperature.
-
asim, what is your cpu temp under light productivity tasks and playing music? mines at 31 degrees centigrade.
thats unfortunate curious, my model came in flawless, i guess u got a bad batch. -
The bottom of laptop remains cool and fans are not noisy upto CPU temperature 60 C. After 60 degree C the fans are noisy. This temperature reaches if i use it on the bed.
(MY cpu temp is mostly less than 50 C with room temp 25 degrees celsius) -
31c idle? You can't be serious. What cpu utility are you using to check that temp?

My fan is on low most of the time. Amazingly, it just turned off as I type this sentence. After in an idle state for a while it will go off.
-
Hey, Toxic. :O
By low, do you mean, the level one above the quietest? That's where mine seems to hover. -
-
Speedfan combines the temp readouts or something like that. Gives you a different read out. Use CoreTemp. Idle should be around 40-55max at room temperature for the cores.
-
That's odd - everyone's temperatures are so low. Mine are typically 45 idle, 54 maximum under load. RMClock and Core both give me the same reading. :x
Maybe it's my CPU (t7300), but then again, some have stated that theirs idle around 30 for those too. -
-
Yes speedfan gave me lower core temps aswell which was hard to believe. Use Coretemp program as i find it easier and reliable.
My cores idle is around 45c as most users and can go up to around 70+ while gaming/heavy load. This is on a DV2500, WITHOUT my laptop cooler.
My fans do not kick in till around 50-55c. Generally it shouldnt be on at all times. -

I decided to sit and watch my temps in an idle state.
The low fan setting drives my core temps to around 32C and then shuts off. The cores then slowly rise to 41C before the fan kicks in and repeats the cycle.
One thing I noticed is that the core voltages keep jumping between 1.2V and 0.95V. Does this mean the Speedstep function is not working properly? -
Nah, that means your Speedstep is working fine. ACPI, I think, just chooses to alternate between the lowest and highest multipliers, and consequently, the lowest and highest voltages. That's how mine works, at least.

I guess when on AC power these readings will go up. I will try it when I go home. (at work now)
