My new dv2550 is so quiet...EXCEPT when I install a program from the CD/DVD drive. I mean, the low-pitched noise is really loud. When watching a DVD you can't hear it at all.

Have others found this to be true or do I have a defective product? Other than the sound during program installation, the drive works perfectly.

If you mean the drive itself, I noticed the noise changes with certain discs. I installed a game earlier that had 5 cds, and the first 3 were quietly accessed. Discs 4 & 5 caused the drive to run like a vacuum cleaner in comparison.

Don't know why for sure, but maybe the discs are somewhat imbalanced?

Yup, sounds just like a vacuum cleaner! I suppose it's "normal." I'll contact HP tech support this week and inquire. Otherwise, the dv2550 is a thing of beauty. I'm so happy with it!!

    Thanks!
