hey all,
i've been an ibm, dell and now hp laptop owner but this is the first time i've come across this problem.
i've had the dv2610 for 2 days now and it seems that the FAN NEVER shuts off. the cpu temp is actually really cool...at about 35-36 degrees Celcius under a low load yet the fan never stops spinning. it's too loud to be used in a quiet library where i do all of my work.
i know of ways to control fan speeds in linux...but this laptop is still too new for ubuntu since most hardware is not recognized.
anyone know of any quick fixes that don't involve repairs or returns? i've read of a lot of complaints on this problem but updating the bios doesn't seem to do anything.
here are some specs:
amd turion x2 tl-58 1.9 ghz
1 gb ram
nvidia 7150 integrated graphics
160 gb 5400rpm hdd
thanks everyone in advance!!

see if there is a bios update. from either the website or the hp software update
-
no help there since the only bios update is to fix some keyboard output thing.
is anyone else having this problem with the same specs? -
I do remember that older BIOSs had the fan running less. However, not only did this cause many overheating problems, but I would not recommend downgrading the BIOS. The fan never shuts off on my nw8440, and I personally don't mind it. I do know with my nw8440, Notebook Hardware Control (NHC) can control the fans, so you might want to give that a shot. Just use it at your own risk!
-
just wondering though...how long have you had the nw8440? does it cause any long term problems and do you lose any battery life significantly?
-
It can also be that you have some programs running in the background. Is there any program that you can use to control the fan for the HP? I know dell has one
-
I picked up a 2610 from Best Buy last month and I had the same experience with the fan NEVER turning off. I thought this must have been a defect since even from a cold start the fan was on.
A week later Best Buy had the 2612 on sale, basically the same laptop, only with the Intel processor. On this one the fan NEVER comes ON when doing standard tasks like surfing, word, or excel. I have made it come on though, so I know it works.
I also pin the processor down to 1 GHz with a max battery profile to make sure it stays cool. It idles around 41c and the fan will kick in at around 46c bringing it down to 38c before turning off.
The 2612 was 100 dollars more, but well worth it for a silent laptop.
I know you were looking for advice that didn't involve returning the unit. I tried a number of things to try and control the fan with software, with no luck. -
hum...do you remember the temperatures on your previous 2610? because if it's a problem with the AMD chipset, then there is bound to be a driver solution sooner or later. i'm just wondering if it is something permanent...
i have 2 weeks to return this thing to bestbuy...i'll try a few more things. -
The temps that I had on the 2610 were low, in the mid 30's which confused me as to why the fan was on.
I have read on this board about the 6600 and the 9600 series AMD laptops overheating until a bios upgrade had the fans on all the time. Maybe this is related?
If you have the option of picking up a 2612 I would do it. I think you would be happier, if fan noise is bothersome to you. -
a futureshop near my place is selling a 2550se refurbished for close to the same price. i'm wondering if this problem is present on the 2550se?
anyone with experience? -
Whew.... the dv2550se...
I first saw the dv2550se on the Best Buy.com web site in June last year and waited patiently for them to arrive in Canada, which they did in late August.
I guess they were produced in an "off" month for HP. After returning my 6th one back to Best Buy I just took my money and ran. I held off until I picked up my dv2612.
I wasn't the only one, maybe just the only crazy one to keep trying. If you read around on the forums you will see the problems that were had. Futureshop is selling refurbished ones, no doubt some of the ones I returned.
You name the problem....., mostly defective screens, only 2 out of the 6 had screens without multiple stuck pixels. One had dead areas on the touchpad, one the scroll wouldn't work, fans that wouldn't turn off. At one time I had 2, side by side from 2 different Best Buys, one the fan was on constantly, the other was fine but had multiple dead pixels.
When I returned one, there was a stack of them at Best Buy going back, the night before someone returned one for similar problems and they opened 4 factory fresh boxes to find one for the fellow that would boot up! For me, they did the exchange, as I was walking out I decided to have them check it in store.... blue screen. I owned that one for about 10 minutes before returning it!
I still liked the design and the color of the dv2550se but enough was enough.
Now that most have these have gone through the production process twice, you might have better luck.
I am kind of glad though, I did get mine for 1399.00 which was before the "a stronger Canadian dollar means lower prices" campaign. At the time it was selling for 999.00 in the US. Now, the dv2612 is pretty much the same laptop but was only 699.00. -
my goodness...
thanks for that. i can't believe i didn't get the hint that 54 laptops remaining in a refurbished bunch should have been obvious that problems were pending...
i'll deal with the running fan for now. hopefully they'll find some bios fix for it soon. -
I haven't had any real heat/fan issues, but then again, I've had my laptop professionally cleaned out several times (We have an on-site help and repair desk here). And even though NHC controls the fan on my laptop, I haven't bothered to change the fan settings from the factory defaults. After all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
As for CPU temps, it typically idles in the low 50's C but under intense loads, it has shot up to 80 C before. My HD has never gone above 47 C. I don't know about the GPU.
Also, I have read up that the fan behavior on my nw8440 is perfectly normal. It's just the way that particular model was designed. I'm not sure about your Pavilion, though. -
HP sucks for long time use, sell up and buy something that is not hp!, i bought mine from pc world superstore, and you cannot hear the noise of the fans over the sound of vista demo's playing at full vol!
-
any suggestions for something that doesn't suck for long-term use?
personally, dell is out of the question. so is acer and asus. that leaves what? apple, maybe. lenovo, i don't like the way the company is going in terms of design and marketability. that doesn't leave much does it? -
i'll stick with the hp and use it till it cries for me to stop.
in any case, i'll still have my old trusty thinkpad to fall back on. they just don't make them like they used to. -
For all u guys who have this laptop, i just went on the site and it said that one of the enanchments in the bios update was for the fan. Downloaded it and did the bios update and wow really a big difference. The fan still is on, but really quiet.
-
The best way is not buying dv2xxx (intel/AMD) series, until then HP will solve the problem.
-
i updated the bios and it did reduce the fan noise slightly. However the cpu fan is still running constantly, even when the temperatures are in its 30's. Is it suppose to be on all the time regardless of temperature?
-
not sure but to tell u the truth the fan doesnt bother me at all, i didnt even notice it untill i saw this forum and listened
-
No it should kick in around 50c . It depends on your BIOS and the fan algorithm in set in it
-
Most of Hp's AMD models run very warm.... AMD processors are very powerful and run very hot in general... The reason the fans run so often its to keep the logic cool. If the processor gets to hot it can cause system errors and corrupt processes. Also if the north and/or south bridges get too hot they will de-solder and cause your logic board to fail... then it will need to be sent to service.
