Very often when I turn on the computer, the rear fan just starts turning on and off in 5 second intervals. Then it stops after after about several minutes. This happens even when the computer is not heating up at all.

    try monitoring your temps first.

    use HWmonitor

I don't think temperature is a problem here, since it only happens every time I turn on my computer or wake it up from hibernation. This is when the temperature is quite low compared to the normal operation temperature.

I'm having the same problem with my dv2700t, except my fan starts pulsing even if I haven't just woken the computer from sleep or started it up. Sometimes the pulsing lasts for only 30 seconds, sometimes it lasts for 10 minutes. Very annoying. Restarting usually stops the pulsing, at least for a while.

I've used Speedfan to monitor the CPU temperatures, and there doesn't seem to be a correlation between temperature and occurrence of the problem. I've upgraded my BIOS to the latest version (Phoenix F.2E) to no avail. Anyone have any advice?

    Found a solution:
I simply rolled back my BIOS to the version just before HP "fixed" the overheating epidemic by setting the fan to run at its lowest setting when the computer was powered on (F.25 in my case).

I may have overheating issues in the future, but I have an external cooler so I'm not too worried.

If you have a nvidia card I noticed the new nvidia drivers do the same thing.. after hypernation/sleep my laptop fan would run loud for several minutes when it was definitely not hot. Basically the fan management was changed for the worse and I rolled back the nvidia drivers to the one that is still on HP's site for my dv6500t. Your DV2700t probably has a 8400 gpu and nvidia wants to crank up the fan so they don't have to replace your MOBO for the faulty soder they used.. They want it to fail after the warranty is up. :)

BTW, those new nvidia drivers are showing up in WU so you may have installed it from there. I understand that normally GPU drivers won't effect the fan but I definitely noticed a big difference from what the nivdia driver did. There was another post awhile back from other users that confirmed this as well. My next system will definitely have an ATI or an Intel chip.

I also suggest you get an extended battery for your 2700 if you already don't have one. It will raise the back end off the table and will run allot cooler. I noticed my 6500t ran cooler and the fan ran less when I put a 12 cell extended battery. The intake vent is underneath and it gets pretty warm on the bottom when you use a flush mounded battery. Also running in powersaver mode in vista makes things run cooler and reduces the fan noise even more. I did this and have not noticed any system performance degradation.
