I've had my HP dv3t since mid June 2009 and had no real problems with overheating until recently. I've noticed that the fans have been kicking in when watching videos and sometimes to the extent that it shuts off my computer instantly. I'm not sure why watching videos overheats my system. Maybe it's the specs?

It's the nVidia issue. Boom goes another GPU...
-
Should I send my notebook in to get it checked out?
-
lol it could also be dust... try blowing out ur vents using compressed air... this is more likely to be ur problem than G105M dieing..

Now that I'm back home I'll try getting possible dust out with a can of compressed air. That way I'll monitor the effects and see if it continues to shut off.
-
I had it for like a week and then had to return it. the fans were almost always on, which bothered me alot with so much noise, i figured it would overheat sometime and cause problem so i returned =/
I liked its portability and design but those fan wouldn't slow down! -
I cleaned my notebook today with a can of compressed air. I'll run a test on it tonight with a game on high power battery settings and see if it shuts off.
-
So after a few days of testing it, all I can say is that nothing worked. Even when my notebook is on high performance, my notebook powers off instantly. This happens when I play for not even 10 minutes on League of Legends and watching movies on Net Flix. Definitely an overheating issue. What should I do?
-
Ideas on this?

Use CPUID Hardware Monitor to look up your temps. Most probably the GPU is overheating. Continuous overheating will reduce the longevity of the electrical components and will finally lead to system board failure.
-
I ran the program while my fans were kicking in and got up to temps at 88 degrees C on the NVidia GeForce 105M. That is really hot. Maybe these small 13" notebooks with GPUs tend to heat up often...
-
Don't waste time, send it in for repair ASAP. Over-heating is not normal.
-
Alright I'll do that for sure. One quick question though: do I need to back up everything before I send it in? If so I need to go buy an external hard drive for that.
-
I would...
It's generally a good idea to keep important files backed up anyway, so consider the external hd a long term investment.
dv3t sometimes overheating and powering off instantly
