My left palm is getting really hot due to the hard drive... is it normal for it to be hot not just slightly warm... its getting really annoying since I got my computer less than a year ago. Is there a way to make the hard drive work less so it doesnt heat up as much?

A lot of dv4's up until the 1400 series (which I believe just started production earlier this year) seem to have problems with overheating. What graphics card and processor do you have? Dedicated graphics will add to the heat (nvidia and AMD), and a T-series processor will run hotter than a P-series.
Did you do a clean install when you got it? If not, removing all the applications and software you don't need/will never use will reduce the strain on your computer. I hear undervolting can reduce the temps a bit, too- there's a thread somewhere on here with instructions, probably on one of the modification boards. You could also invest in a cooling pad.
Though, you should still be under warranty, so you could try calling hp about it. I'm not sure what kind of success people have had with that, you might want to dig around in the dv4 thread a little, there's been some discussion regarding that.
