My dv4-1155se is currently about 50C with lots of stuff running in the background, CPU load bouncing around 20-40%. One of the really nice things about this model is that the 12 cell battery, besides giving you close to 5 hours of use, props up the back of the notebook for better cooling and a slightly more pleasant keyboard angle. For a retail model I highly recommend it.

You can do a little better with configure-to-order direct from hp.com of course. That'll let you configure a LED backlit screen and Blu-ray, which are pretty much the only two things the dv4-1155se is missing.

Completely idle... hmm, closer to 40C, I don't remember. Even with 20-40% CPU load the exhaust is merely warm. The GPU runs cooler than the CPU. I like the 14" screen, it's significantly more portable than a 15.4" notebook, but you can get better GPUs for the dv5z and gigabit Ethernet too. I have a 25.5" monitor/HDTV plugged into the HDMI port for when I really need a larger screen.
