Ok, I just had a chance to sit on the couch and test the battery life of my new dv4000 (2Ghz PM, x700 video, 6-cell battery). I started with the brand new fully-charged battery. I turned the screen brightness down a few notches, and I proceeded to do some basic web browsing (wireless) and some light web development (just making changes to a CSS file).

I turned it off at 5% battery life left. It only lasted 1 hour 55 minutes. Very disappointing.

I know the 12-cell would get me more than this, but it sticks out so much. Anyway, I also got the free second 6-cell battery, so if I lug that around, I could get almost 4 hours on battery. However, I am yet to try a DVD. I would assume that the battery life would be the same or worse for the DVD. That would mean that I might not be able to even watch a DVD with this thing.

I wasn't necessarily getting it for the portability, but I assumed I could get 3 hours min out of any notebook post-2002.

I'm getting about the same as that, even while playing WoW...! Last i clocked it, i got about 2 hours of life on a full charge before it told me to hibernate. Maybe the wireless comsumes energy...? because i'm playing on a Ethernet network here...

For it to turn off with 5% remaining is standard. You can set the option in the Power Management settings.

Try tweaking your power management settings to see if you can get more runtime out of it. Make sure you're not set to Always On as this will force your CPU to run at full speed all the time. Setting it to Notebook/Laptop is a recommended option.
