Hey, I have searched in this forum and haven't got the help I needed so I thought I would post a new thread.
A friend has a hp pavilion dv4000 and when she was playing sims 2 it was shutting down for no purpose... I did notice that the fan was way much louder than my z96J. So I installed notebook hardware control to measure the temps, and at idle it sticks at about 60~64ºC , I start up Sims 2 and wait for 5 min, alt tab and it goes up to 95ºC then a message pops-up warning about the temperature and that windows will shutdown etc. Basically I know the problem is High Temps, we got it to HP and they said they don't have warranties for "games", what the hell was that about? Basically if I have a render to do for like half an hour it will shutdown and no work can even be done... I would like to know if you guys know where can I download the latest bios for this laptop since they told us to flash the bios...
Thanks in advance

Get a can of compressed air and blow out the fans. Also check out the cooling guide.

I had the same thing happening a while back, I thought the heat problem was the issue. This is not the case, I've tried everything to clean it and the problem persisted (shutting down every ten minutes now) so I had to take it to a company i work with on computer repairs. They cannot find out what the problem is but they think it might be the motherboard. I've done some research and found that many users of dv4000 have the same problem and in some forums, it has been said that the problem is related to the powerjack and a docking station might solve the problem. But this solution is not really useful, very uncomfortable, and requires a 300 dollar investment in HP products again which I have no intention of doing. The company is looking into the powerjack issue at this point and I'll update you on their finds.
I'll mention that I bought the computer in january 2006, my harddisk blew and took all my data with it after 8 months, HP service stalled me until my warranty expired (a whole other issue), I paid to get it fixed but since then this problem disabled me from using my laptop. Totally unreliable company and totally unreliable products. -
Make sure you clean out all vents also delete any unused programs and buy a cooling pad -
hey people, apparently i have, or had the same problem with my laptop
its a hp pavilion dv 4000 series (to be specific EK976EA) it started making some strange noises coming from the fan and as result shutting down in the middle of processes like virus, trojan scans which requires maximum cpu performance. at the beginning i thought it might be something to do with the amount of dust inside and tried to vacuum it but that didnt seem to work. so i found the solution by installing a small downclocking software and this prevented the cpu from getting very excited thus gave the instant shutdowns a break. but i wasn't satisfied since i couldnt get the top performance from my laptop.
after a while i used my laptop like this one day it turned down, when i turn it back after the windows logo, when its supposed to load the desktop and start up the operating system, screen of the laptop got all blank like it has no power.
so i sent it to hp service to get rid of all the problems and fix it for good.
it turned out that my hard drive blew just like rapush and all hp service did was to replace it and gave it back to me with the same heating up problem.
when i noticed this and gave them a bitter phone call technical service guy suggested me to flash the bios from a link in hp website, and for now everything seems to be stable...
so here are the links to the solutions i found so far,
http://www.diefer.de/speedswitchxp/ this one is a temporary solution which downclocks when used in battery optimised mode
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...n&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1144763&os=228&lang=en
and this one helps improving the fan algorithm and "hp people" claim that it will help with the problem.
i hope this information can help you all.
all the best
