I have a one-month old dv4000 with the ATI X700 GPU (other specs in my sig below), and right now I'm running the default/pre-installed HP drivers for that graphics card.

My question is has anyone out there tried to update to the latest ATI offering? Or, has anyone tried this lappy's GPU out with the Omega drivers?

I know that some of the drivers are "specially designed" by/for HP much the same as is done with Dell, Gateway, etc. so before I tried to mess with different drivers I wanted to find out if anyone out there had already tried this and what their experiences & impressions were.

    Thanks!

    Josey

Well I actually noticed that the Omega drivers were WORSE than the HP drivers.

That to me sounds quite unbelievable. :p What Catalyst is the HP Driver based on and what Omega Version where you using?

Usually, they only add the whole "Made for HP" crap on drivers because they are too lazy to support new drivers. That's what it was about when I worked with supporting HP laptops anyway... I would go ahead and try the Offical catalysts or Omega's, as I am sure you would see improvements over the original driver.

The biggest reason that I have some reservation about updating the stock HP GPU drivers is that they (HP) is not listed on the ATI website as one of the manufacturers/system integrators as being supported.

    Not sure what to do.....

How about the latest Mobility Catalyst 5.11? Get them at www.driverheaven.net. I am using them right now, they perform beautifully.

The 5.11s aren't yet supported (or listed as such) by HP. Sager is listed on the site as being supported, so I would suspect you'd be fine. Me however I'm not sure.

Yes, I'm supported - I can download directly from ATI.

But, since your laptop isn't supported, you have to get it somewhere else. Just because they aren't supported doesn't mean that they wont work. I know a lot of people use Mobility Catalyst on notebooks that aren't 'supported'.

I think I'll wait until someone who owns the dv4000 tries out the latest ATI Mobility Catalyst drivers so I can hear how they work for them. If I had to guess I'd think they'd work fine, but since I'm not actually gaming on my lappy yet there's no need for me to look at updating my existing drivers.

I'll be interested to hear from someone who is using their dv4000 for gaming though.

Well the main thing I noticed was when I was using the Omega drivers I would play games and video would be occasionally choppy. I had zero problems with the HP drivers.

Further reinforcement to stick to what I know works before attempting to try something that's not "officially" supported.

I was just advised by a Senior Editor at Laptop Logic Magazine to try the Omega Drivers...but when I went to mirror sites I saw a significant number of driver versions and froze... my machine is working fine right now and I just couldn't put the trigger without more data on which version to install....
