i was using the wireless functionality on my dv4t yesterday and, all of the sudden, this morning, the wireless quick touch button remains orange/red and i am unable to connect to any wireless networks...
i have restarted several times, restarted wireless services via control panel, restarted the HP wireless quick touch application and still nothing.
each time i swipe my finger over the quick access wireless button, it remains orange/red and just says disabled. when i go to control panel and try to 'connect to a wireless network' it says that my wireless radio is off and needs to be turned on.
any ideas on what this could be? i have not installed anything recently / updated hp software / nothing at all that might conflict with this and, as i said, this worked fine yesterday.
does anyone have an idea on what this might be?

Try opening the application called "wireless assistant", just type it in on the search box if you have vista...
I'm thinking you accidentaly disabled it through that software...if it's installed. Try it. -
What's showing up in device management?
Have you checked to see if you have anything logged at the time this issue started in event viewer? -

device manager is clear - all devices are recognized. i will take a look at the wireless assistant program when i get back to the unit. i will also look at eventvwr to see if anything came up between the time the wireless worked and the time when it stopped.
thank you guys for these ideas. -

man, i checked wireless assistant and it says the wireless is enabled but the light still remains red/orange...
it almost seems as though this touch button is malfunctioning and staying on the 'off' position because the software is seeing everything as OK....
i might even do a recovery on this to try to fix this annoying problem.......... i didnt check the event viewer however.... -
This is a common problem, i've read alot of posts to do with this issue. Sometimes the mute button stays orange as well:

Try reinstalling the quicklaunch and audio drivers. If those don't work then maybe go ahead with the restore... -

wireless assistant - says the wireless is enabled but the 'turn on' button is gray'd out.
i uninstalled the last windows update i saw on the list (only 1 and the ones before that date back about 3 weeks or so) and that didnt help.
i reinstalled the quick launch and quick touch software, then i deleted the wireless nic from device manager but still nothing!
the wireless button still remains red!
does anyone have other suggestions? this unit is abt 5 weeks old. im calling hp on monday to send this thing back. -
disconnect with power supply
take off battery, then hold the power-on key for 5 seconds.
plug in the battery and try it again.
this method is good with my laptop at least =] -
If the wireless card is detected but you cannot turn in on, I'm positive that the switch is bad. Since it's new, you should send in for service. -
Hey timesquare, have you tried this method? This seems to fix alot of minor issues these touch pad things have. This sounds like a huge pain in the *ss though!!
I seriously feel like getting one of those cheap pentium M laptops for $200 off ebay and be done with all this new technology.
Touch Sensitive problems, slot load drives, processors that frickin WHINE (??), Vista, etc. >(. Drivers shmivers, my old P4 never needed any drivers or anything, worked out of box, updated XP here and there, the end.
Technology seems to have peaked and is now going DOWNnnnn... -
uninstall HP Wireless assistant. This issue effects a lot of the newer series HPs with the wireless button on the capacitor strip.

does wireless card show under network devices?
if show uninstall drivers and let vista reinstall it -

^ it showed up fine in device manager. i reinstalled so much stuff - the wireless nic drivers, hp wireless assistant and a couple of other apps. NOTHING seemed to work. I was so sure that it was a hardware problem at this point.
i did not try the method where i remove the battery. i got so annoyed that i reimaged the entire machine back to factory settings and the wireless touch button worked again.
i thought it was a windows update that started the problem so, to recreate the problem, i went to windows update and installed all 40 updates. i rebooted the machine and the wireless button still worked. so, for now, i dont think a windows update/patch caused the issue.
im going to take an image of the machine once i am done so i dont have to keep uninstalling all the hp junkware, etc.
i thank everyone for their input and suggestions. I hope all of you guys have a stellar 2009. -
Wireless card is probably dead. Only way to rule out hardware is to do a recovery or clean install.

I have similar issue....
A minute after laptop boots up wireless connection breaks. In wireless network manager it shows connected but "identifying..." status, so no connectivity to internet. Solution to this problem is to stop wireless network from touch button and start it again.
Any hints whats the issue/?
I have turned off always fan on feature in BIOS. Can this be a problem?
My hard disk also remains very hot. Is this usual? Can I ask for any specific brand hard disk so that it functions properly?
