Just wondering if this has happened to any notebook user:

for a week now, my ac adapter/power cord has been making crackling noises when i unplug it...at first i thought it was static electricity, then today, I saw smoke coming from it

it won't work for awhile, then it will magically start charging my notebook

it seems really dangerous & i'm afraid it's gonna catch fire or burn me.

    anyone else have this problem?

Whether or not they do, you should ditch that adapter immeadiately and obtain another.

Dont use it anymore. The power adapter for my DV4 got smoked due to high voltage from 220V to 440V and i unplugged it right away or else my new DV4 would have gone with it.
The power adapter was right beside my leg when i saw smoke and noise coming from it... i thought that it was going to explode... so beware...

Yes, get a new one immediately! The cracking sound was a clue, but the smoke is a no-brainer!!

Probably because the user was also smoking something.

    Hehe, sorry I couldn't resist. :D

I had this happen to my NX6120. Exactly the same way you described, only mine went up in flames and even burnt one of my table legs. I'm starting to feel that it might be a common problem with HP power adapters.

Just a note on pwr bricks, I noted in the service guide that there are two of them (for the DV7 anyway) you have a 65W and a 90W.

Mine has the 65W, and at the stores I've checked the boxed "replacement" units are the 90W ...

That shouldn't be an issue, but there was another post about someone who was having graphic issues while plugged into his "replacement" brick, and I think that is related to this. The difference int he guide listing has to do with what type of graphics adapter and associated RAM the lappy has.

    Just FYI.
