Just wanted to get thoughts on the dv4t heat issues I have been reading about. Does the left palm rest really get as hot as I have been reading? Does it depend on the HDD that is chosen? I was going to get the 320GB HDD. I hate that I have been reading about this issue because I have had laptops with the same issues with the left palm rest before and it made me very uncomfortable. I was going to get the 12 cell battery also and I noticed that it does raise the back of the laptop up. Does this help with the heat issue on the left palm rest? The dv4t is the perfect size that I have been looking for but I will consider getting the dv5t if it doesn't have heat issues.

I have a dv4z and the left palm rest (mostly on bottom) gets really hot. I have the 250 GB HDD, not sure what brand it is. I'm probably going to return it because it gets so hot and the fan is always on.

My dv4t has no heating issues whatsoever. It usually stays around 42-44 degrees when I browse the web and stuff. (Right now its at 43 C) By the way, mines is the Western Digital 250GB hard drive (WDC WD2500BEVS).

I have a 2 year old Dell D830 with a T7300 processor and modest vid card, and 2G or ram running XP. It doesn't get "hot" at all. It gets lightly warm and that's it. Also, the standard 54 watt 6 cell gives the laptop easily at least 4 hours of run time even running on "balanced" performance with a decent brightness, brighter than my DV5T on "power save" mode.

I really don't understand HP's inefficiency that translates to heat.
Heat production is inefficiency. I'm even undervolting my DV5T and the battery still can't get better than 1.5-2.0 hours.
Temps are cooler with undervolting, and the only way to get 2 hours from the hi-cap battery is to run the display at very low light levels and keep it set on "power saver" mode, which reduces performance overall.

I don't know. I'm seriously thinking of getting a new D830 or just getting a MacBook Pro. I've worked on a few of them at work and they are incredibly stable, fast, efficient, and run lightly warm, not to mention I LOVE the OS, and it will run Vista or XP FASTER than an equivalent Windows machine.
The bad part is that the price for a closely similar hardware setup to my DV5T is about $1400 vs my $833 HP.

I also dont have heating issues... Seems like the Western Digital hard drive (which i do have) is the only cure?

At worst, the left palm-rest just gets a little warm.

On the bottom of the case though, at worst, it gets very warm.

All in all, there's not really any heat problems with this hard drive and this laptop overall in general.

For those who have heat problems, maybe you can try ejecting the useless express card holder and leave the slot open.

My friend has one and it gets really hot throughout the notebook. You can't use it on your lap for more than 15 minutes. I think it is just poor heat management within the notebook vs. the hardware.

quatrei: no but i know the difference between hot and warm :)

eliteshadowx: ur spot on, i don't use the laptop on my lap except for very rare occasions where, on the contrary to wat u said vuong05 i have no problem keeping it on my lap for alot more than 15 min.

Maybe u guys block off the fan when u put it on ur lap.

cwunch: no, in face it's very silent, I can barely hear it except for when i'm gaming where it becomes audible. i think u shouldn't let this put u off of the notebook, exchange it for another 1, the 13" is too small :)

u mean bearable? i exchanged my laptop bec of dead pixel. so this is basically my 2nd dv5..and this one doesnt get hot in the palmrest unlike my former..i guess it depends on the harddisk..i have yet to check if the HD is fujitsu just like my former hot hd..

As for games, I have loaded up occasionally some free online mmo's, and my hard drive typically gets up to 50-55ish, which never gets uncomfortable. My dv4t uses Intel GMA x4500, so I don't really run any today's games like crysis.

If i use DV4 to watch movie, will i still get the unbearable heat issue?
If you say the laptop use to surf net + doing word document all the minor process stuff will get the unberable heat issue, then i will not consider this laptop anymore =(

Just the thought of any issues made me consider going with the Lenovo T400. I'm now waiting patiently for it to ship.

The DV2700 gets slightly warm on the left, too. The bios update fixed it to an acceptable level. Maybe there's one for your model, too?
