As the title states over the last week or so I've been getting the occasional choppiness in my sound when I game and/or watch vids on YT. Just every now and again the sound will skip a bit. I really really hope it's not my speakers on the way out, this laptop's only a month and a bit old![]()
I've also noticed that my High def audio software is missing... it used to sit in the system tray and I could usually access the control panel by adjusting the sound controls, maybe it's currently only using 'normal' sound?
Or could it be that I need to update my sound drivers? I don't know if this could suddenly start choppyness.
Can anyone please post which audio drivers they are using for their dv5s?
Thanks for any help.
Edit: Is there a possibility that it's the game I play (WoW) causing the sound issue because the server is really full? and the fact I'm running YT vids in the background while I'm playing WoW?
Just trying to figure out what's suddently causing this...
-
Check your HP driver page first for the drivers. If the choppyness persists after updating then a program in the background could be causing it.
-
anywho...i wanted to bump this thread along, i am suffering from the same issues.... choppy audio, no matter what video program you use the chopping audio is still there (amongst other issues i have been battling with)
i tried the latest SRS audio capable IDT's no luck
BIOS latest
services, to the best (and safety wise) minimised
DX updated
nothing in the background associated (to my knowledge) to sound ...but please post drivers, bios used, and possibly list of services.... for us to replicate the fixes
and to the poster the issue has been there since the first boot as well, i just did not notice it earlier cuz' the 5100 was not connecting to my belkin N1 (and no i wasn't out to get N1 speeds...see intel erata.... but the bloomin' thing needed to have the wifi switched off and then restarted to have it work)
hi guys first post, joined the club (DV5's owners) in OCt '08
i know the meaning of tough love after buying this lappie.. (was an exclusive desktop user till now, and my 939 X2 rocks still in every imaginable way..the stability, the upgradeability, the desktop far outpaces this laptop) -
I get sound choppiness too. I did a fresh install of vista x64 and after installing all of the drivers from the latest driver thread I had horribly choppy audio all of the time. Then I popped in 4gb of ram from 2gb and installed Vista sp1 and a ton of updates. This thread reminded me that the audio was really choppy so I open itunes to test it, and to my surprise the audio is working perfectly.
Since the only things I've done since the audio got better was install sp1 and every vista update available, and install an extra 2gb of ram I have to say that it's one of those 2 things. -
Ok, nevermind, I'm still getting some minor choppiness. The first song in itunes went great, but I skipped a couple tracks and now i'm getting the occaisional skip, or crackle or someting.
I'm getting the choppiness out of my headphones too. -
make sure you have tried the latest IDT drivers (6.10.6087.22) and i believe i saw a trick on one of these threads to disable the power saving feature which helps improve sound quality.
-
i thought about power saving as well.....but there really isn't an option, that paticularly references multimedia or sound
it has to be a service
i am using the latest IDT drivers posted on HP's website (mine is a DV5 1009TX, with 4GB of 800's , t9400, bluray,hybrid tuner,)
windows is updated ('cept for perhaps the office updates) -
Well guys, welcome to the club, it seems like it is becoming an epidemic with something that has casued this issue. I have done everything from, drivers, to even switching my laptop for another and keeping the harddrive. It is something on the hard drive for sure casuing it! I am going to do a full system recovery and see if that solves it, which is should. There must have been an update or something that is causing this issues. Wierd in any case... but kidna glade I am not the only one..lol. Anyway, I'll let yea know when I do the recovery and if it helped,
-
apparently the guys over in the DELL section have been facing similar issues and have it pinned down to the latency issues
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=341918
it seems that this is a P45-Intel Storage matrix-and-something-we-cannot-figure-out problem........this is why i hate laptops-(expensive pieces of junk...no amount of flexibility like you get with desktops) -
Tinderbox (UK) BAKED BEAN KING
Could it be a Bios issue? , I suppose if you still have the problem after a full recovery you will know.
-
thanks for the info on that, i am going to check that out when i gte home. cheers.

For choppy sounds.....
Uninstall all your sound drivers and legacy audio devices from Device Manager, restart your laptop and download the latest sound drivers from HP.COM and also perform a BIOS update. This should solve your problem.
If still problem persists, give HP TOTAL CARE a call, we are always there for you. -
the 1st bit does not do anything... but might have to get some HP total care help... but not sure what they can do ...
-
Restart your laptop and press F11 to go to Recovery Manager and reinstall your audio drivers. This should solve your problem.
-
The issue is your wireless receiver is interfering with the speakers. This is because there is not enough insulation between them. Turn you wireless (internet) off and magic the issue disappears.
-
DV5, IMO the issue is related to latency issues
well i am happy to say this has been my fix to an issue (amongst 5 others) that has plagued my laptop ever since i bought in Nov of 08
uninstall IDT and Intel matrix storage controller (in safe mode)
on reboot prevent either from installing on their own
install----------> intel_msm_8.7.1.1001...[ no these are not some special drivers, make sure you install an intel Matrix storage driver of 1001 series]
reboot and then install the IDT from HP's website
(all of these were initially done under cover of enabling VT in bios...but after a month i have found that disabling this option in bios now, produces no ill effects....atleast in the area of sound issues)
and Evil...... i have been through HP's tech support twice (30+ minutes of call each time..Mumbai and bangalore.. explained everything to the letter...(that despite using the most aggressive of power saving features) .. HP states a battery giving 1hr 35 min (and decreasing with rapidly increasing wear...... ) is normal for a 4 month old laptop....well i am sorry this is not right........there was not a single qualified technical person i was able to talk to at either call centers..... -
Tahnks for the post paradigm018, I'll try that when i get home. I am sending it back to HP warranty anyway, the keyboard is slanted to the right and the USB isssue of the right side ports just cutting out and not workign until you reboot is still there.
-
this problem also happened to me (dv5t) and what I did was make sure i had the latest IDT Drivers(6.10.6087.22) or even with older drivers i believe this would work. I know regarding the following you'll think "already done that mate don't be a moron" but try it anyway.
set your power plan to high performance, reboot and recheck to make sure its still on high performance then play a song/video and the audio should work fine. I tried everything and that really did work well.
When i change it to power saver mode though the sound gets choppy again even if i go from power saver to high performance(requires a reboot for some odd reason).
anyway give it a try and tell me if it works for you(please try it before replying with "this did not work, your stupid") -
yet another option is to open up your idt control panel, click preferences then general and disable power saving and external amplifier shutdown.
-
with the fix, i posted.... i can leave the option of power save in the IDT panel, and some of the most aggressive power saving features in VHP without suffering from the dreaded audio issues
-
I' tired your step, but it does not work. use "Your Uninstaller
software to uuninstall the driver uder safe mode. Bu I noticed that aftere reboot Windows tried to find the driver by themself (evenI'd click cancle durrng the process) and the installed driver is "Windows High Definition Audio" nnt IDT. Then Iremove it and install the IDT driver. Please advise -
I can confirm that just remove the Intel Matrix Storage driver will solve this problem. It's about latency like someone in another discussion mentioned (Sorry I cannot remember who). It's work for me. I didn't hear any chop noise anymore.
-
**Solution**
Delete the Intel Matrix Storage Driver. In the add remove programs, then run CCleaner, for Registry clean up. Restart your comp and run DPC Latency Checker. It should bring it down alot lower then it was. Mine was up at 9000US now it is below 200us. Hope this helps a bit. I know I have been soo frusterated with this issue. But, Try it and see if it works for you!
Cheers. -
Hey I have this issue aswell and when I remove the matrix storage driver, and reboot, the system won't turn on now.. so I needed to do a recovery. What I'm doing wrong?
-
The Matrix Storage Manager is necessary for certain configurations, so i'm afraid you're stuck with it.
Mine was choppy too under Vista. I am now running Ubuntu but will probably have to go back to Windows because i need FL Studio. Anyhow, let's check if it's a driver at fault. Download the "DPC Latency Checker" and let it run. When the sound stutters there should be a huge red spike on the graph. The more difficult part is finding out what caused it...
PS. It has nothing to do with wireless interference, however it might have to do with the wireless card drivers - in my old laptop i had worse stuttering that i have experienced with the DV5 and narrowed it to a bad wifi card. Replaced it and everything ran smoothly from there on. -
Yeah its a latency issue,I downloaded the checker and theres red spikes from time to time... >.<
-
Same as mine used to be... I am going to try Windows 7 to see if the issues are still there. Stay tuned.
-
thanks bud
-
k, sorry for the double post, but after updating almost every driver I noticed the choppyness is off, i'm pretty happy.
