I'm trying to connect my Seagate FreeAgent Pro external drive via esata to my dv5, but the computer doesn't detect the drive. I've tried restarting the computer and updating the Intel Matrix Storage Console, but it still doesn't work. the usb part of the combo port works.
This is my first time actually using an esata drive, so I have no idea what could be going wrong.

Why don't you try taking the laptop to a store and see if any other adaptors works? adaptor

drive formatted yet?

SPQR: if I understand the OP correctly he is trying to use esata to esata not usb to esata.
illtww: if the OP reported it working usb to usb then it shouldn't be a formatting problem.
cubicjack: It seems some time ago there was a problem with the esata receptacle on the Pro which required pushing the connector in very tightly to get a connection or going as far as to shave a bit off the end of the connector to get a good connection. I'd post a link but am not allowed sorry, try googling a bit, you should find it.
FWIW I've a CQ45 (a bit like a dv4 without the tv tuner) and the esata works well, the BIOS picks up the drive as a second 'Notebook Hard Drive' (can boot vista from it) and the speed is much better than using USB. Using the esata port you should be able to see it in 'BIOS setup' without using any drivers.
With HDTune and an old Samsung HD250HJ I get an average transfer rate of 22MB/sec on USB and 59MB/sec on esata using a cheap combo USB/eSATA external box.
Hope this helps.
