I bought a dv5-1160us ($847) and received one with a bad display (dead pixels) and the one I received as an exchange had the same issue... (both were new in the box w/ all factory seals)... was this a fluke or an issue with the dv5-1160?

Just a fluke. It's pretty rare. It could be that both notebooks were part of the same batch in the factory and they had issues with those LCD screens. Just swap it over again if you can.

I was unable to swap as they were all out... I am looking at an ASUS as an alternate... but it is a 14.1" screen instead of 15.4" (though the resolution is the same). The processor on the ASUS is better (P8400) and the video card is better (9600 GM)...

Just not a lot of experience with ASUS.

Your call I guess you'll probably be happy with either. I'd go the higher spec value wise.

Sorry probably should have noted Asus are really good. If at the time there was a decent price on some of the Asus notebooks when I bought my HP that would have been my first choice. The price was too good to turn down on the HP.
