I am looking to upgrade my HP dv5000. I currently have 2GB of memory installed - is it possible to upgrade to a 3GB or 4GB in the dv5000. Furthermore, I am interested in upgrading the 100GB hard drive as well. What type of hard drive is specific to the dv5000?

    Thanks

    Is it the DV5000t ?

Can you run CPU-Z and confirm which chipset (i945GM/PM), and which RAM (DDR2-SDRAM) it is using right now ?

And is the HDD SATA ?

    I believe it is the dv5000t -

    Chipset
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

    Northbridge Intel i945PM rev. 03
    Southbridge Intel 82801GHM (ICH7-M/U) rev. A1
    Graphic Interface PCI-Express
    PCI-E Link Width x16
    PCI-E Max Link Width x16
    Memory Type DDR2
    Memory Size 2048 MBytes
    Channels Dual
    Memory Frequency 332.5 MHz (1:2)
    CAS# 5.0
    RAS# to CAS# 5
    RAS# Precharge 5
    Cycle Time (tRAS) 13
    Bank Cycle Time (tRC) 21

    RAM = DDR2

I am not sure if the HDD is SATA (I don't believe so)

    Thanks

Ok, now the DV5000t was released in the first quarter of 2006, and 2GB modules DDR2 SODIMM modules weren't even available then. So, HP's spec list still shows 2GB Max.

In any case, an upgrade to 3GB will be fine, if you can find a cheap 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMM Module. That computer won't be able to recognise more than 3.5GB.

I think the HDD is SATA, but just to confirm, go into Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > Check which driver apart from the Channels --> Ultra ATA or Serial ATA ?

It'll be great if you can provide me the HDD Model No. from Device Manager itself. :)

So I can take out one of the 1GB sticks of memory and put in a 2GB stick and that should work well?

    I appreciate it!

I am not sure about the memory, since HP still lists 2GB Max RAM supported.
There is no sense in going to 4GB, so I think it'll be best to try out 2+1GB. Swap a single 1GB module for a 2GB module.

HDD is SATA, so you can checkout the Seagate 7200.3 series. They are super cheap and the fastest right now.

Yes, both are compatible and good.
For the memory, you can checkout G.Skill/OCZ/Crucial as well, if you can get something cheaper with a lifetime warranty.

    No Problem.

BTW, do check the brand of the memory/memory chips in CPU-Z (SPD). Try to buy something similar, in order to rule out any incompatibility issues, which rarely occur in the newer systems. :)

(You are trying to overcome the listed 2GB limit, so it is best you buy a module with similar memory chips)

I looked at CPU-Z and saw this listed in both my memory modules -

    DDR2, PC2-5300 (333 MHz), 1024 MBytes, Samsung

Are there any known compatibility issues?

Thanks very much for this tip, been having thrashing issues with win7 sucking up all my mem. Confirmed that you can more than 2 gb to dv5000t laptop. I bought a patriot 2gb module and replaced one of the modules for a total of 3gb. Win 7 is flying on this machine now.
