Well I left my adaptor in a classroom last night. I won't be able to go back to school until tommorow. If I can't find it and I check the lost and found, I would have to buy another one. Would there be a place I can buy it or do I have to go to HP.com. I just want to have it before Tuesday. I also left my Case Logic sleeve last night too!! Not a good night... :(

Probably get a better price online, but I would guess anywhere they sell HP notebooks would have adapters as well.

I bought it @ Best Buy. I didn't know but I got a 90W ac adaptor. The one that comes with the laptop is only 65 so I am happy about that. :)

I also found my $10 off coupon for accessories and used it to buy another case logic sleeve. :)

The 90W adapter could potentially damage your system board over an extended period of time. I would suggest returning it and getting a 65W. Also, if you do send it in for warranty work, and are using a non-HP power supply that is above the specs of the original, you could be billed for it if it is determined that the AC adapter caused the problem. Though, if you don't send your AC adapter in, they probably won't know.

BTW: I spoke with HP online tech support about what power adapters should be used, here's the convo with my real name changed to this nick.

    Rachel: Hello Szadek
Rachel: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebooks. My name is Rachel. How may I assist you today?
    Szadek: Hello
Szadek: Well, I have a question basically
    Rachel: Sure, Please go ahead.
Szadek: I have a dv5100z notebook, and it came with a 65W AC adapter, also with a 90W car adapter.
Szadek: How long will the notebook last connected to the 90W?
Szadek: Will it, over a long period of time, damage the system board?
Rachel: No, this will not damage the Notebook Motherboard at all.
Szadek: Ok, so this system board was designed for both 90W or 65W adapters
Rachel: Yes, 65W on AC Power and 90 W on DC Power.
Szadek: ok, So what would happen with a 90W AC adapter? Any difference?
Rachel: To assist you better , may I have the Serial Number and Product Number of the Notebook?
    Szadek: let me look
Rachel: Sure, you can find the Serial Number and Product Number of the Notebook by locating on a sticker attached to the top or back of the Notebook.
Szadek: yeah, it's on the bottom, have to maneuver the laptop some.
    Szadek: ********** *******
Rachel: Thank you for the information. Please stay with me wile I search information for you.
    Szadek: Thanks
Rachel: Thanks for being with me.
    Szadek: no problem
Rachel: Szadek I found that the 90W AC Adapter should not be used for your Notebook model.
    Szadek: Ok,
Rachel: As the ratings of the output of a AC Adapter and DC Adapter are different, using the 90 W AC Adapter might damage the internal Motherboard circuits.
Szadek: ok, so it's not designed for it. Thanks for the information

    Abraham: Hello Segadc
Abraham: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebooks. My name is Abraham. How may I help you today?
Segadc: Hi. I bought the 90W AC adaptor since I lost my 65W that came with my laptop
Segadc: it says the dv5000z will work with it
Segadc: however, I heard it is not safe for my laptop
Abraham: Okay. May I have the serial number of your Pavilion Notebook?
Segadc: What's the deal with this adaptor?
    Segadc: sure
    Segadc: @
Abraham: Thank you for providing the information.
Abraham: I am sorry that the serial number provided by you does not reflect the data that we have. Please recheck and look for the exact letters and numbers, as it is an alphanumeric number.
Segadc: ok, let me look at it again
Segadc: I might have to subsitue the @ for @
    Segadc: ok
    Segadc: I forgot an @
    Segadc: @
    Segadc: sorry about that
Abraham: Thank you for providing the information.
    Segadc: your welcome
Abraham: Segadc, I would like to inform you that this notebook comes with AC adapter of Input voltage 100-240VAC, 4.9A, 50/60Hz - Output voltage 65-watt, 18.5VDC and it not recommended to use the AC adapter of 90 Watts
Abraham: The part number of AC Adapter is 403810-001
Segadc: why would HP say it is ok on the site then?
    Segadc: http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...9_personalization/browse1/landing_PDP&promo=1
Abraham: The link you you have given shows that the AC adapter is compatible with DV5000z series notebooks and not DV5000 series. I would like to inform you that DV5000 series notebook are different from DV5000z series notebooks
Segadc: But i thought I own the dv5000z series
Abraham: One moment please.. while I check
    Segadc: ok thanks
Abraham: Thank you for patience and co-operation.
    Segadc: sure no problem
Abraham: I am sorry for the confusion caused to you Segadc.
    Segadc: No problem.
Segadc: So what is the verdict?
Abraham: I have check the specifications with the serial number and I see that your notebook is dv5000z notebook and I have confirmed with my supervisor that both 90 watts and 65 watts AC adapter is compatible with your notebook.
Segadc: so it does work. This guy on the internet posted a chat and he said it doesn't work...can I show you the transcript? I am not doubting you just wanted to show you.
Abraham: I do understand your concern segadc. However, I have confirmed it and it should work

    Interesting.. Two different answers.
I know the 90W will work with the unit, but it seems we are getting two different answers on for how long. I had bought a 90W previously and was using it, after that conversation I bought a 65W AC adapter. Well, my goal is to not have any issues with the laptop. Warranty will cover the 90W adapter. Thing is, HP isn't the manufacturer of the laptop. Compal is. I'm going to see if I can contact them and maybe get a straight answer.

    Ok cool.

Personally, the 90w seemed better. It didn't get hot (the adaptor), battery charged faster (of course), and my laptop was not nearly as warm when charging with the 65w.

Oh yeah, the guy said since you accidently added a 1 where a 5000z should be (5100), the hp staff member might have thought you were talking about the non customized version.

For some reason, the non customized version is locked at only accepting 65W...

Well, I didn't accidentally add a 1, heh Whenever I type in my model number on the website, it lists it as a 5100 CTO Custom To Order I believe (after just thinking about it) I did custom order the laptop. And they have all the info about it, not sure what's going on.
