A friend of mine gave me his dv5000. It has 1.8ghz Turion and 1gb ram and this thing is running slow.
Virtual memory is set ok, no spy ware, no viruses.
I just cleaned the registry and defragged the HD.
Anyone have problems like this?
-
Define slow? Does it have a 5400rpm drive?
-
Well ran spyware, nothing came up. Decided to run anti-virus, nothing came up. Cleaned up the registry, deleted temp files, temp. internet files, and still ran like crap.
My last option before format was defrag, so I analyze it.
14.9GB of fragmented files!!!
This laptop was bought in July 06' holy crap I haven't seen that much fragmented in such a short time... -
Okay, so you defragged it and it isn't better?
I have a dv5000t (sig) and it doesn't randomly run slow. I take care of it, though, continuously. -
Its been defragging since 1:30pm central time and it is only 16% complete, just to give you an idea of how slow this thing is running.
-
im suprized he gave it to you without reformatting it, maybe you should have a look around and see if theres any goodies he left
-
Let it go until completion.
-
yup let it go till its done, but when its done have a look see around lol

every two weeks? nah maybe once a month maybe not even that.i defrag once a month or if i dont feel like it i just leave it till next month.
-
I defrag once a week, or if I've been moving a lot of big files around.
-
i totally disagree with the once a week or 2 weeks theory. i defrag once a month if that. and i do not see a slow down in my comp if i leave it for awhile.
while it is important to defrag you do not need to do it every week or 2 weeks. -
While the above may work for you... it depends on how much you use the computer, the amount of free disc space you have, the number/size of files, etc.
One reason to drag is to reduce data loss, the potential to lose data that is... De-fragging reduces the amount of work the OS has to do to keep up with everything...

i use my computer ALL the time i know what defrag does, but defragging once a week is over kill
i think if u defrag once a week or once every two weeks i think ur alittle paranoid about ur computer, i use my comp all the time transfer files move files all types of tasks and like i said i defrag once a month maybe not even that and i do not see a loss of comp speed or a loss of anything for that matter. defragging should be pretty low on the list but not forgotten.
and besides what works for me, if that was the case why is anyone giving advice on here if it works for you doesnt mean it will for someone else. -
Personally, I try to defrag about one every month or two. I consider it the equivalent of dusting the apartment to prevent a bigger problem (like loosing files).
BTW, I've seen some really screwed up problems with hard drives and they are rarely caused by not defragging. -

How often you defrag depends entirely on what you do with your computer.
If you do move a lot of big files around, then you absolutely need to defrag as often as possible.
If you're like me and use your PC to record TV, then you find out quickly just how often you need to defrag. I have to defrag my system every few days if I use it in the way I intended when I purchased it (as a Media Center PC). -
First off fragmentation in your file system has nothing to do with why your computer is stuttering so much. The problem is Windows has switched the transfer mode of the hard drive(s) in your computer. Go into the device manager and select the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Expand the section and select the Primary IDE Channel, goto properties and look at the advanced settings check to see if Current Transfer Mode is PIO or Ultra DMA Mode 5. If it's PIO that is your problem. To fix this you'll want to simply uninstall the device and reboot windows. Windows will automatically detect it and reinstall drivers for it setting the transfer mode to defaults which is Ultra DMA Mode 5.
I actually had worked on a Pavillion DV5000 twice already the first time i reinstalled windows and everything seemed to work fine, (it was plugged up with so many issues that many things were broken and unfixable) Which makes sense because reinstalling windows would have reset the transfer mode to default DMA. However a few of the same issues came back to haunt the computer and i was poking around till i found out the only thing that made sense. What is the slowest component in your computer? The hard drive(s). Well guess what grinds to a hault when the hard drives for some reason slow down? Everything.
