ive had my dv5000 laptop since last year february and it has worked like a champ, i had no complaints whatso ever until recently.. :(

theres a problem with my screen, when ever i turn on the laptop it would flash and display a whole bunch of colors then eventually turn white..i have to put the machine in standby (using the Fn key) or manually power it down with the power button (and then restart it) to try and get the screen working again..this happened fro the first time about a month ago..like twice..i thought it was in isolated problem as it stopped completely untill this week, and its much worse..

usually it takes me like 10 restarts to get the screen working properly..

right now, after countless restarts the screen is not working :(

now does anybody know whats the cause of this?, is it a quick fix (meaning a loose connection or whatever)..or is the screen itself dead? or the mobo..

right now its 6 monts out of warranty..so guess im going to have to foot the bill for new parts if they are needed...

this is so not cool :( :(

I think the first step would be to try and hook the laptop up to an external monitor and see if the problem lies with the notebook's display or with the videocard/mobo.

if it's a screen problem, you may want to check loose connections, bad wires, etc. Worst case you may want to consider a new screen.

If it's the actually computer causing issues, you will have a tougher time figuring things out. It may turn out (no matter where the problem lies) that you would be better off purchasing a new computer, based on the cost of parts and labor.

    thanks for the quick reply..

thanks for the tips..i completely forgot about hooking it up to an external display..ill do that tomorow..

i also download the service manual from HP's site, which contains the dissambly guide..the connector for the moniter is relatively easy to access, all i have to do is remove the keyboard basically, so im going to try that 2moro also..

also, im currently posting from the said laptop..lol, guess it decided to give me a break..

i forgot to mention that once its working, it works flawlessly..which now makes me afraid to turn off the darn thing

once again, thanks for the quick response

well i jus plugged it into my desktop lcd and it works..so i can breathe a sigh that its not the video card or the motherboard..

so hopefully its just the connection from the motherboard to the screen got loose, or worse case scenario i need a new screen..

i hope its not the latter..

well i jus pulled the comp apart, and got access to the connection from the mobo to the screen..it was a tad bit loose...i was able to force it in a little bit but it wasnt convincing enough for me..

BUT..it seemed to have worked, i turned on the machine and it actually booted right up without one flash or anything..im currently using the machine now..

im not jumping for joy YET..im gonna see what happends in the next few days..

Same problem....HP DV5140US ( DV5000 ) with radeon xpress 200 m series in it. The notebook was returned to HP service center twice, however, since the problem is/was intermittent the defective hardware was never detected or replaced, HP instead 'reloaded' their bloatware OS and claimed my factory obtained ATI and AMD drivers were the culprit. Now the notebook hardly ever boots correctly and may give this scrambled gray screen during otherwise normal operation. HP now contends it will cost me $298 US dollars to get it serviced.

lesson learned....dont EVER buy HP again

Has anyone else noticed the hide and seek game HP is playing with the bluetooth drivers for the broadcom integrated circuit?
