this is my second dv5215 which i have bought in the last week (returned the first one) that i am having the same exact problem with.
it ran fine for the first 2 days, then it started stuttering, booting slow, being slow. even if it starts running fine for a while i can't listen to music or watch a video as that will be all choppy. it's not a spyware/adware problem...i have no idea what it is. it started today when i was playing pes5 and worsens whenever i download something.
would be a real shame to get rid of it as i got it for $700 after rebates and was originally delighted but it's really non functioning now. what the hell is the problem with this model?

Where are you buying the laptop from? Are the laptops new or refurbished?

Hi eugenet,
First are you using the Nortons that came with the machine? If so disable it and find a virus scanner.
Next look at teh programs and processes that are running and look of one that is using alot of cpu resources. If you find one shut it down and see of that improves the situation.
Next if you haven't already get rid of all the bloatware.
Hope this helps -
i bought it from circuitcity and i am assuming it is new. there was nothing about a refurb (just a rebate!)
the first thing i did was get rid of their a/v software and put my own on it. then i got rid of all the crap that comes with it. -
Can you tell us the specs? Maybe your just doing too much at one time?

eh?
amd turion64 at 1.8ghz
1gb of ram
mobility 200 xpress
everything i do is choppy now...i am trying to install different sound drivers to see if that helps -
The reason why I ask is that I hear some horror stories with computers and components that are floor models or refurbs that weren't disclosed as such. The stores try and ensure they meet all "privacy" issues before being sold to you. In doing so, any programs they use and tweaks made could have affected some of the current software in the computer.
If you got rid of the a/v (Norton Internet Security), make sure you did a thorough uninstall first. Symantec tends to stick around in computers unless you follow complete uninstall procedures that are often on their website.
What a/v did you install? Maybe it's that program that's conflicting with something on your system. -
it wasn't a floor model, but is there anyway to find out for sure?
i installed basically the same norton package, except it is provided for free by my university and works great.
would you recommend wiping the drive and installing a different version of windows? maybe it has something to do with the hp restore software? -
also what it does when it's not running slow is it runs like normal and then takes a pause every 2 or 3 seconds

OPen up task manager and see what is eating up your CPU time. Theres obviously something running in the background and causing your problems. See what it is and we can help ya get rid of it.
But it honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was a hardware problem. Unfortunately, HP doesn't seem to have the best track record lately with the 5000/8000 series keyboard problems, bad south bridge chips with the ATI Xpress 200M chipsets, etc. -
system usage fluctuaes between 4 and 20%...explorer takes up the most cpu usage.

i have seemingly fixed my problem by wiping everything and installing a different version of windows.
however, i don't have the battery check utility. the one i downloaded from hp just gives me an error and tells me it has to close. am i missing something? -
Try reinstalling the utiilty. What version of Windows did you install? If you have the recovery disks, there should be a Windows disk there, which is just Windows XP without bloatware or other such stuff.
Your problems were a result of the bloatware programs and the ones you installed to keep bloatware away -
d'oh. i had no idea there was an xp disk on the recovery setm and luckily for me i didn't make one.
still having problems with the battery though. nowhere does my computer recognize it - in power play, power schemes, and the program crashes before starting -
I've experienced the exact same problem. This usually occurs when you try to install another anti-virus software on top of Norton. I suggest that you go through PC Recovery (F11 during boot-up) to restore the default factory settings. Only this time, DO NOT activate Norton when you do the initial setup. After the setup, remove Norton before installing another anti-virus. I could not find any other way to fix this problem.

can i still do the pc recovery despite the fact i formatted the hp recovery dprive? (it didn't help me much when my computer wasn't working so i figured why bother)
my only problem now is the battery isn't recognized by any appliccations -
...hello?.......
