    Well after my sony burned out i am set on buying a laptop from HP. Since i am located in UK things are a little more perplexed than for the average US buyer. I have come down to this two;

    HP Pavillion dv5t 15.4" (from ebay hidevolution.com)

    * Color - Onyx
    * Operating System - Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
    * Processor - Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.4 GHz)
    * Display - 15.4" WSXGA+ High-Definition HP BrightView WS (1680x1050)
    * System Memory (RAM) - 3 GB
    * Graphics Card - 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
    * Personalization - Webcam Only
    * Hard Drive - 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    * Keyboard - HP Color Matching Keyboard
    * TV & entertainment experience - No TV Tuner w/remote control
    * Networking - Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100AGN and Bluetooth(TM)
    * Modem Port - High speed 56K modem port
    * Primary CD/DVD Drive - Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
    * Primary Battery - 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    * Productivity Software - Microsoft(R) Works 9.0
    * Extra 6 Cell Battery (Quantity) - NONE

    Amount: $1,670.00

    And from hp.co.uk
    HP HDX16-1000 http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/uk/en/ho/WF06a/321957-321957-3806904-3806906-3806906-3769205.html

    For £1000 which is roughly $1520.

    Now i know that this is "which to buy" section of the forum but i have two questions that i'd appreciate personal views on.

    1) Which one is better? Is there a final verdict? dv5t>>HDX16 or is it the other way around?
    2) Is it risky buying off ebay and am i putting myself in trouble buying an American product that is destined for Europe? Will there be compatibility issues if i buy the US product etc etc? Has anyone similar case where he had problems with customer support and repairs when with an American warranty wanted to get his laptop repaired in Europe?

    So many thanks in advance.

    I like more vertical space, that's why I chose the dv5t.

    HDX16T is better in screen size, screen resolution, overall finish. I would not even think to swap mine for dv5t even if someone pays me $200 difference.

    go with the hdx16 for sure the 0.14ghz difference wont be huge cuz both are 3mb l2 cache anyways with the hdx you get higher screen resolution so you can enjoy the blu ray bettter. also size difference isnt much cuz its wider

    I dont like the keyboard on the HDX16 the number pad seems small vs all the 17 inch models in the past. Yes i know its not 17 inch but my point stands valid either way

    I'm kind of puzzled/irritated of these threads(no offense meant, just that this is like the 5th one lol :p)

    These laptops aren't geared for the same thing, hence they are different(duh lol XD). The HDX16 wasn't meant as your everyday laptop(as the dv5 is), it was meant as a mobile multimedia station.

    So in that regard, it trumps the dv5. It has better screen resolution, a subwoofer(so better audio) and a larger display.

    It isn't meant as your everyday laptop like the dv5 though. It is bigger(still portable, but it does make a difference) and slightly heavier. On top of that, their performance is similar(since they use the same hardware more or less) so the main benefit you get from an HDX16 is really that feel if you're using the multimedia aspect of it.

    So really there ISN'T a definite answer to "dv5 vs HDX16" because it depends on your needs as a person and whether or not each machine fits those needs(and there's also the question of each has their own opinion lol).

    Thats a lot of trashing from someone without a laptop. :D :p

    Thanks, i understand that it can be frustrating seeing topics as this popping up everyday. And indeed you are right, it boils down to personal opinion and purpose of use (mine is work and gaming). Just wanted to gather opinions and really to see if anyone had experience with buying an HP laptop from US and using it within Europe; for warranty etc etc.And also get a verdict about buying from ebay.

    cheerio.

    lol sorry, I didn't mean to bash, just that I don't like the oversimplification of things.

    There isn't any "better" in life, it all comes down to factors. What if I ask someone what's the best car? Chances are I'll have to answer loads of different opinions based on different types of arguments lol :p

    Anyways, I didn't mean anything offensive and if it came off that way, I'm sorry :( For the record, I may not own a laptop currently(just sold my old one a few months ago), but I sell a few at work every now and then lol ;)

    As for ebay and buying HP, I know HP US doesn't ship outside the US so you'd have to buy it form another reseller. As for ebay, just make sure whoever you're buying from has a good reputation(which links to the amount of successful transactions they've made). As for warranty, you'd have to ask HP directly probably if they cover international warranties. Some companies do and some don't.

    No offence taken at all, and hope the same goes the other way for my joke with regards to you not having a laptop.

    Yeap that ebay seller has 100% over 500+ sales, so i guess he is reputable. As far as the warranty is concerned HP was a bit vague about it so i guess i ll give them a ring again tomorrow.

    Now lets get at it...dv5t or HDX16??

    :p

    Well I'm sure yo can probably contact the seller and talkt o him/her a bit before the purchase >.>

    As to answer your question formally...

    I believe the HDX16 would be better since it does have more perks than the dv5(a subwoofer, a widescreen view, a numberpad), but at the cost of portability. Some people already find 15.4" a bit ineffective to carry around so if you plan on moving the laptop around, then I'd suggest sticking with the dv5 since they spec the same. Not sure about the specs of each in the UK but I'm guessing they must be somewhat comparable.

    The HDX16 is a great laptop. It's a bit heavier and wider than a DV5, but that's the tradeoff for a terrific 16:9 screen. The speakers are pretty good, blu ray is available, the gpu is good enough for new games, and it runs fairly cool.
