    Hi All:

I'd just like to confirm and see what the various opinions are, and what the actual facts are, regarding the "best" and the most "suitable/proper" RAM is to upgrade the dv5t from 2gb to 4gb. the 2gb is a "free upgrade" from 1gb, when you order the dv5t now from hp.com. so, both DIMMs are used up, therefore, you have to buy 2 new sticks of 2gb each.

folks have talked about this particular OCZ:
    Model: OCZ2M8004GK

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227251

    OCZ Model OCZ2M8004GK
    Type 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM
    Capacity 4GB (2 x 2GB)
    Speed DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
    Cas Latency 5
    Timing 5-5-5-15
    Voltage 1.8V
    ECC No
    Buffered/Registered Unbuffered
    Heat Spreader No

I've read the article on the home page of this NotebookReview.com website regarding memory and found it to be very enlightening, thx to the writer!! Having read that, I'm concerned that I do NOT know the motherboard of this dv5t and other tech specs.

I do NOT wish to buy slightly incorrectly/incompatible RAM and end up compromising the performance of my dv5t. Granted, i'm getting the 32-bit Vista which only will see 3.2gb of RAM, yet, the writer of the article clearly suggests that there are benefits to 4gb even in the case of a 32-bit Vista environment.

There are also the issues of 3gb being two UNMATCHED sticks (1gb stick plus a 2gb stick): the 2gb stick would have dual channels/pipes and the 1gb stick would only have 1 channel/pipe, compromising on the speed/performance. That said, the type of mismatch is said to affect AMD processors far more so than the Intel P8400 as the Intel has designed certain ways around it, yet, it is STILL NOT RECOMMENDED if it can be avoided. So why would anyone with a brand new machine want to force themselves into using 3gb? I don't see any reason whatsoever.

So, i am about to get 2 sticks of 2gb RAM but would like to learn from you good folks here what is THE most appropriate and foolproof RAM to get for the dv5t with the P8400 processor. Core latency, timings, etc.

thanks very much in advance and look forward to hearing from you all and learning!

    Phhew, pretty long post :D
Best to get the DV5T with a pre-installed 64-bit OS. (or go through the pain of upgrading to 64-bit yourself later)
Get any amount of ram. Sell it or throw it into the drawer.
Get the OCZ PC2-6400 CL=5 or the similar Kingston HyperX Memory. Install the 4GB DDR2-800 CL5 and you will also get the advantage of Dual-Channel + the whole 4GB will be recognized.
