This will be my first laptop, so I wanted to get some info regarding the
    battery/charger, etc.

What would you consider to be the maximum time to run the dv5t with the battery installed and hooked up to the AC charger? I have read that it's not
a good idea to leave the charger on too long, since the battery needs to be "cycled" to maintain its capacity.

If the computer is going to be used for long periods of time, can it run
strictly off the AC charger, without the battery installed?

If you don't plan on using the battery for a long period of time, then I would sugguest taking off the battery and store them in a cool dry place.

Yes, any laptops can run on AC charger without the battery in it, but just be ware that whenever the electricity runs out that your laptop will lose power as well.
