Yea that pretty much explains it. Maybe once every couple of hours. I'll just be sitting there and *pop*. ***?

It could be a defective drive. Some notebook optical drives have a manufacturing defect in which a part wears out prematurely and the disk drive can open on it's own. Eventually this part "breaks" and the optical drive will no longer stay closed.

Same here dannyjeffers, first I thought I was touching the little button to open it, then I thought touching around it was to sensitive, but then finally I noticed it just opened by its own, especially yesterday; it opened like 4 times for me last night. I'm curious if you have the same physical defects as me too. Try pressing up against the bottom where the 3 light indicators are for power/charging/hdd around that whole area. Near the optical drive, under the touchpad, I get a click when i push up against it.

Mine only pops open when the computer is tilted a certain way. I just spoke to my case manager and he's sending me a new disk drive. -
Same used to happen with me with my old HP dv5191ea, i asked a technician and he said it was a faulty drive, so u shd be ok whn u get a new drive from HP.

I've got the same problem with mine. Opens by itself one in a while. Highly annoying since I don't want to end up breaking the tray while moving the laptop around in bed. Either way my laptop have 4 other warranty issues and I'll talk HP to ask for a replacement in one and a half weeks.
dv5t disk drive opens on it's own
