I thought I was done with this problem - now it's come back
to haunt me. I originally ditched the on-screen volume control
and installed the latest quick-touch driver, which eliminated
    the problem.

Now, the clicking is back, which is audible at all times, unless
the volume is turned off completely.

Any ideas on how to get this PC back on track?

Don't touch the volume controls. And clean the volume controls when your computer is off.

Good advice. I checked out an earlier thread about this and found a
post that recommended cleaning the touch-panel with alcohol. I did
just that and everything is fine. Apparently, the panel must be super
sensitive to sweat, etc., which creates capacitance issues.

I think a lot of dv5t owners, myself included, could have saved some
aggravation by busting out some alcohol and a rag.

This is beyond ridiculous. HP should be ashamed making a product this faulty.
