i just disassembled my dv5t to fix an issue i was having with the screen. the screen seems to work fine now however it is running ungodly slow.

in order to get to my screen cables i had to take out the Following:

    -hard drive
    -WLAN module
    -Switch cover & keyboard
    -the display bezel

i'm not exactly sure what might be causing this because it was working just fine (except for my screen issue) before the disassembly

also it seems to run a little bit better in safe mode but its still slow

anybody have any ideas on what the problem might be?

EDIT: after playing with it for a while its main problem is booting and programs are crashing. it takes about 10 minutes to fully boot and then it runs at a normal speed however programs keep crashing like crazy.

You're going to have to double check all the connections you had to disconnect and make sure they are seated properly.

Everything on the touch panel working properly?

yeah i don't seem to have a problem with any of that stuff.

i have tried reconnecting the hard drive. i'm not sure what i could have disconnected that might have caused this though.

also after playing with it for a while its main problem is booting and programs are crashing. it takes about 10 minutes to fully boot and then it runs at a normal speed however programs keep crashing like crazy.

    Three things to try:

    1. AC out, battery out, hold power button down for 30 secs.
    2. reseat the RAM.
    3. Try booting up with only one RAM module in slot one. Swap RAM modules between boots.

You may also want to double check the wifi card's connection. Does it read as device working in device manager?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all without results unfortunately.

I also tore it apart again and checked all the connections which didn't do the trick either.

You could try wiping and doing a clean install of your os, however if something happened to the hardware it won't make much of a difference.

I'm hesitant to do a clean install because I did one a couple weeks ago and given the circumstance it seems more like a hardware issue.

Starting to think my hard drive is failing the way its acting.

Do you have any other reasons to think the hard drive is the reason?

the sporadic behavior, long load times, extremely long boot time, and now withing the past 10 minutes chrome is coming up as a corrupt file. could be other stuff but hard drive failing explains pretty much everything going on.

time will tell for sure but is there anything else i can do to check?

do you hear any irregular clicking or other random sounds? Try running scan disk to check for bad sectors.

No weird noises but I'm running chkdsk now. It already says its replaced bad clusters and its been stuck on 23% for about 30 minutes now.

I'm assuming that's probably not good sign right?

Have you checked the CPU and GPU temps? could be slowing down to prevent overheating.

Have you checked the HDD's smart info? could be failing or could have been dropped, perform an extended smart self test

Yup, bad HDD. Grab your data off it and time for a new one.
