Just this past week my newish HP dv5t notebook (purchased in December) stopped loading Windows Vista after the bootup screen with the HP logo. It would simply stay as a black screen while the lights on the keyboard were on and the fan continued running. I downloaded an HP troubleshooting guide and went through all the steps, i.e. running BIOS and testing the memory, hard drive, etc. I also took out the battery and unplugged the AC adaptor and pressed the power button for 30 seconds to let out any extra power, as guided. Finally, I also attempted F11 system recovery, but the screen just froze at BIOS.

So I called HP and the tech had me do the same things. Then he said I had to order system recover disks for $21, so I begrudgingly have done so. However, he said my data would be lost when use the disks, which sent me into alarm. They said there’s nothing they can do, that I will have to take my notebook into a technician to recover my data. Very frustrating. My question is, can I recover my data from my hard drive myself? Would an Serial ATA 2.5 notebook hard drive enclosure work? If so, is that the correct kind I need, any recommended brands?
