The C: drive on my wifes dv6 has corrupt files on it. I've run chkdsk /f and all, but there are bad sectors that crash any backup of file transfer that I attempt, so it's got to go.

However, the physical drive has the HP Recovery and HP Tools partitions, as well as the boot loader that allows access to the recovery partition.

My question is, if I replace the C: drive with an SSD or another physical HD, what can I do about reinstalling Windows? Can I access the recovery partition if I put the old HD in a USB carrier? I looked at the files in that partition and it appears that there are no executable files there.

I'm sure this has been answered before, so sorry, but I looked and didn't see anything along these lines.

    THANKS

you can use the recovery partition to create the recovery DVDs, and use those to restore windows on the new drive. or you can install a clean windows on the new drive and use the key at the bottom of the laptop below the batteries.
