Hello! I've been shopping around for a new laptop and found what I think is a pretty great deal from Newegg, the dv6-6c50ca for around $900 CAD, taxes and shipping included.
- i5 2450M (2.50GHz)
- 6GB DDR3
- 750GB HDD 5400rpm
- AMD Radeon HD 7690M XT (which the 6c50us doesn't have, apparently?)
- 15.6", 1366x768
The CPU and GPU benchmarks seem pretty solid. I don't mind the lower resolution since I've never used anything higher than 1280x800, and I've read it can improve games' FPS to some extent. But for the price listed it seems almost too good to be true, and I haven't been able to find any reviews of this exact model so I want to be sure it's as good as it seems. My primary uses are gaming (BF3, D3, CitiesXL, etc.) and web design (lots of work with Adobe CS).
Any opinions/advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I think 1366x768 is too low for CAD
You can get one for 35% off or $450 off from HP's own website HPdirect.com with a coupon code -
Does it make a difference if I actually live in Canada?
From what I've read HP Direct doesn't ship here. I'm also on a budget and the dv7s are not within it, unfortunately.

900 dollars is not a good deal at all. I got the laptop in my sig for 700 and free shipping with warranty still active from ebay. Its actually horrible deal. 900 dollars could buy you an Asus G53 or G73 1080p gaming laptop on eBay. You could do 100% better than what you posted. I dare say that laptop could be had for 500 used on ebay.

Fellow Canadian, yes that deal is not very good, however the laptop is not terrible and some people here are overreacting.
I've kept a close eye on this laptop, and just today noticed a significant drop in price:

Here for $636.83 CAD, when I checked shipping it was $12.99. This is by far the best deal on this laptop out there right now, and possibly the best deal on this laptop in Canada ever.
EDIT: another online seller which consistently has the 2nd lowest price is here:

Note that while American's are happy to say you can find better deals on ebay or just configure straight from HP, the key difference which you already know is that we cannot customize our own laptop here.
The only way to, for example, get a base dv6 with the 7690M XT and a FHD 1920x1080 screen, is if you customized through a US HP dealer on ebay (and pay for shipping, which negates any possible savings), or have someone order it to a US address, then you pick it up. Basically, this means you are not going to find a "better deal" by finding a more customized HP laptop in Canada. The chance that someone customized a laptop exactly how you want it, bought it in the US, brought it in to Canada, and has turned around and is selling it on ebay or kijiji, is clearly pretty slim.
A great advantage of this laptop is that BestBuy sells it, this means the opportunity to see and play with it in store, or failing that, a hassle-free return within 14 (?) days, if you change your mind. You'll also get 5% (less than $10) of the difference, print off the page I linked to and bring in to BestBuy when you go to purchase.
Another important note - HP laptops are on sale now because a new batch are coming out, featuring Ivy Bridge (Intel CPUs) and Kepler (nvidia GPUs), these will feature greater performance and better battery life. Obviously, these new versions are going to come at a cost.
Here's the latest information on NBR, on what you could be missing:

Keep an eye on the 1C2C.ca website, as their price seems to change regularly. Also, if you google the product code ( DV6-6C50CA ) you'll come across the shopbot.ca link for this product, which compares prices of this laptop across multiple retailers - Another useful (but not perfect, it doesn't always update right away) tool for keeping an eye on the price.

Good luck! -
rep given to the above post.
I hate that we can't customize hp laptops in canada .... the screen resolutions options we have up here are a joke. -
I had to get the dual channel cable and then the screen to update mine. There were NO places in Canada that offered a DV6 or DV7 with a 1080p screen.
Ridiculous.... -
Thanks for the responses, everyone - particularly JTF2, very helpful and informative!
I've decided to go the Best Buy price-matching route, which will knock almost $200 off the Newegg price and get the laptop into my hands faster. It doesn't look like the Ivy Bridge series is promising anything that'll make it worth the extra cash or the wait (especially considering my current laptop is barely functioning at this point). I think I'll be more than happy with the 6c50ca for the next few years.
Thanks again! Cheers.
