I orderd the dv6 along with a crucial m4 256 gb, since i want to replace the 1tb hdd obviously. But a friend told me that the windows 7 program that comes with the computer is only for the hard drive enclosed, meaning i will have to buy a new windows 7 copy for my ssd.

Does anyone have experience replacing the hdd with a ssd in the new dv6?

Create the recovery discs from the original HDD.. Click on the start button and search for "HP Recovery Media Creator" (iirc, don't have access to it now). When those are created turn off the system, replace the HDD with your Crucial SSD and boot from the recovery discs you just created.. This will reinstall Windows along with all the drivers and HP tools (and bloatware, which you can uninstall later).. You don't need a new Windows7 copy/license.

Sorry for being so stupid, but what happens when you start the laptop with the ssd while there is no OS on it? Do i have to start the laptop with the recovery disc inside or is there a certain moment for inserting the first one?
I have never replaced any part of a pc before..

boot it with the disk in the drive. Also if you want to skip the bloatware . There are two options on the recovery disk.. A full restore or the second choice that will just install windows and the drivers.

Gotten my DV6-7009TX over the weekend. Just replaced the factory installed Western Digital Blue 750GB to Crucial M4 256GB yesterday. This is what I did since I do not have the Windows 7 CD to install with and DVD media to create recovery discs. I only have got a 8GB and 4GB thumdrive in hand. Btw I do not use Restore. Normally when a Restore is needed, I will do a clean install instead.

    Softwares, Hardwares Needed:
    1. Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool
    2. Windows 7 .iso
    3. 8GB Thumbdrive
    4. 4GB USB Thumbdrive

    1. Download Windows 7 .iso and Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool
    2. Run Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool after Windows 7 .iso download is done and chooses 8GB USB drive when installing
    3. Copy and paste C:/SwSetup to 4GB USB drive (Note that the folder is almost 4GB big)
    4. Swap factory installed HDD to new SSD (During the swap, do take down your Windows 7 CD-Key at the back of the machine to be used later)
*Please unscrew the 4 screws from the HDD plate with care!!! I almost bold one of the screw as it was really tight*
    5. On bootup, press "ESC" to enter BIOS and set boot option to read USB drive 1st, Save and Exit
    6. On reboot, it should start Windows 7 install (Please note that during install as you have set boot priority to USB 1st, during the reboot within install, remember to change boot priority back to HDD/SSD otherwise the install will run forever
    7. On install complete, pop in the USB drive with SwSetup folder and install all necessary drivers via device manager
    8. Do Windows update and HP update and you are good to go!

Understand this is a lengthy install but thats just the way I did it. Hope that helps! :D

I was camping around this forum before my purchase and now think is a good time to give back some to my best knowledge.

Since Win7's backup and restore tool is "SSD-aware" and my SSD won't come until next week, I am going to install my windows ultimate and install the necessary drivers from the SwSetup folder on my USB key. Then install all the programs I need and make an image backup using Windows Backup. Then when my SSD arrives, I'll just restore the image onto my new SSD drive.

BTW, that is a nice guide you wrote there laofunker.
