Hi all, my dv6000 has a common problem, it just wont turn on anymore, it's starts up and shuts down with in 5 seconds and repeats until i turn it off - i'm gonna either strip it for parts or sell it as seen for spares/repair.

Two questions if you'll indulge me - is this the motherboard that's gone? Most pages online suggest this and getting a new motherboard is expensive and likely to go again i think. Secondly do you guys know where the bext place for new to try and sell it for spares is and what could i possibly expect from it with a bad mb? think the battery is a bit rubbish too tbh.

    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks

    could be a dead GPU.

You could try the oven trick, or if the graphics arn't removable, buy a heat gun. Set it to 300C and heat up the GPU for a few mins.

Could be one thing to try before throwing the motherboard away.

Lookup "BGA reballing" or "BGA reworking".

Or, you could see if HP will honor their limited warranty extension with your computer and fix it for free.

I'm not confident enough for the oven trick or heating parts of the MB/GPU - not convinced i'd be able to put it all back together ok either...

Think i'll stick it on ebay unless there's a sellers forum on here?

    michaeldcoates,

I know you may be hesitant to take the dv6000 apart but in all actuality it really should only take some one with limited experiance and hour or so to do .. i have it down to 15 min.. and you may try with out the heat gun or oven trick ... the gpu just needs to heat up enough to regain contact .. 5 min with out contact with the heat sink .. can be accomplised by taking out the stupid thermal pad under the heat sink on the gpu.

Here are pic's and instructions .. is all crude but works.. wife and daughter have been using them for months now ...
