Hi,
just got new dv6000t yesterday and the dvd/cd doesn't read certain cds - mostly data cds that i've burned earlier - my dell laptop as well as desktop both read the same cds just fine. the optical drive does read dvds, other cds, burns cds/dvds. i've chatted with hp's tech support and after going through uninstall/install/restart the drive as well patch nothing changed. he suggested i either get replacement burner for free, exchange the laptop or return it. has anyone had this kinda problem? and what do you guys think i should do - just get new drive (wonder if it's gonna be refurbed or new) or exchange (same - will it be new/refurbd) or simply return? any help is appreciated. thanks!

If the drive reads and writes new CDs/DVDs, I would not replace it. Old CDs often have compatibility issues with newer drivers so you cannot be sure that the replacement will read them

I'm having problems with my ODD also. My dv2000t is about 4 months old, and all of a sudden my ODD only recognizes discs when it wants to, but more irritating is the fact it randomly spins when (a) I simply move the notebook, (b) lift my lid, (c) close my lid, (d) type on the keyboard, and (e) sometimes when just sitting there idling. Did you apply any hotfixes recently, such as the Core Duo hotfix? I'm trying to troubleshoot my issue in this thread.

thanks for info Vassil_98, but i really don't think it has anything to do with compatibility. my dell e1505 with almost identical hardware reads same cds just fine.
i've called HP support this morning and guy was trying to get me to use paid support claiming this was the only thing he could do for me?!? he didn't car that it was only 2 days old!?! i hung up and called again, this time spoke to a lady who took over my laptop online and went through few toubleshooting steps - didn't work. finally i have convinced them ship me new burner so that i can install it. i'm questioning now whether i should've bothered with HP in the first place if their service is so inconsistent. my dell e1505 had no probems whatsoever and the reps i had to talk to about warranty were very helpful ... well, i guess i'll just give a new burner a try. as for that issue you have mentioned DarkJedi - no, i don't think i have that problem. -
I've had it with my drive also. I tried watching a DVD tonight and the just the slightest motion of the laptop causes the drive to lock up during playback and start blinking. Just the breathing motion of this thing sitting on my gut was enough to cause the movie to freeze up several times. I think my drive is defective also so HP can expect to get it back. I've spent a week troubleshooting this problem and nothing seems to be working. In fact, it's getting worse. The act of typing this post has caused it spin/blink several times. Stupid piece of crap.
