i'm currently only getting 2 hours of battery life right now with the "power saving " mode on. i have an high capacity six cell battery and have wireless running. i am also running vista, not xp. i would deem my usage during the 2 hours as normal to light.

i am wondering if this type of battery life is to be expected or if my battery is defective. thanks.

Your battery may not be calibrated properly. Exhaust it completely. Then, charge it to full.

To calibrate, use the computer until it says low batt. Let it go to sleep. Wait around 5 hours (this should drain the battery even more), then proceed to charge. Don't use your computer while it's charging. Wait until the charging light has turned off. Now you have calibrated your battery! One thing to note is, calibrating too much can be bad for your battery. I remember an article from PCMag suggested every 30 charges or so. Good luck.

i have drained it twice now, however i have not waited five hours as chiaroscurist has suggested. i have read of users getting 2.5 hours with a normal six cell battery, is this true? i should be expecting more than 2 hours with a high capacity six cell, right? anyway, i will try this, thank you for your help.

also, should turning wireless on drain that much battery?

i've done what you guys have suggested, still no noticeable improvement. what type of settings should i have set in order to expect around 3 hours? i have power saver mode on, but i'm not entirely sure what else i should change.

What is your configuration? I'd say 2 hours could be OK if you have some powerful VGA and full brightness.

From what I hear HP aren't known for their long battery life, and considers you are running a discrete GPU I wouldn't say 2 hours is far from what it should be...

    Just speculating of course.
