    hey guys,

I used the clean vista install guide (with no activation) on this forum on my cuz's dv6000t. Everything went smooth. I d/led all or most of the drivers on the HP site, and i told him to let me know if anything wasn't working (because i might have missed a driver or something).

Anyway, he called me up and told me that he can't watch DVDs (movies). He said Windows Media Player is giving him this message: "dvd decoder not installed.... or something like that." After checking the HP troubleshooting page online i'm assuming its the 'DVD decoder not found' error message.

What does this mean exactly? How can i fix this??

oh and i was never able to get Quickplay to work (i still have the SwSetup folder saved on my external). How do i do this too? Would installing quickplay fix the other stuff?

thanks so much in advance ;) I really hope i didn't screw my cuz's new laptop up.

Which version of Vista did you install. If it is Home Premium/Ultimate then it should include the decoders. Otherwise installing any DVD decoder software should take care of the DVD playback. You can also ask him to try Videolan( www.videolan.org) to play the DVD's.

As for as istalling Quickplay it is as simple as runing the setup.exe and following the on screen dialogs.

    Thanks for the reply.
He has Vista Home Basic. So i guess that would explain why he doesn't have a decoder. What are some good decoder software and where can i find them (free if possible)?

And i'm guessing the setup.exe file for Quickplay is in one of those folders that was mentioned on the vista install guide. Correct?

thanks for the help so far.

Decoders are usually provided with DVD players and Quickplay should provide the necessary codec to play the DVD's even in WMP. As for as free decoders I have no idea, I usually just install Quickplay or just use the default DVD players which almost all manufacturers ship with their systems.
Yeah, it should be located in the SWSetup\QPW. Plus you might want to install the Quicklaunch buttons software(if you havent already) to associate the top row media buttons to open Quickplay.

I had the same problem that you did with the dvd decoder problem. A day later windows update said there was 3 important updates it had to install. i installed these and restarted. Worker fine after that.
