I've had a dv6000z hp pavilion laptop for about 6 months now, no problems until today. The laptop stays plugged in to the AC adapter almost all the time (has a battery as well), and at night I just close the lid to put it into hibernation rather than turn it off.

This morning, I lifted the lid and clicked the mouse to try and bring it out of sleep mode. The fan spun and the LEDs blinked like normal, but the screen stayed dark. I rebooted the laptop, and as it is trying to start up, it emits 1 long beep and 2 short ones, and does not display any picture. The fan spins, LEDs are all on, but nothing on the screen.

I googled around a bit, and checked this site, and tried the following things:

    1) Removing the battery and rebooting.
    2) Disconnecting the AC adapter and battery, holding down power for 1 min to drain capacitors, plugging back in, and rebooting.
    3) Tried connecting both an S-video cable and VGA cable to the laptop and my TV, still no picture came through.

I've thought about opening it up to reseat the RAM, but I'm afraid of voiding my warranty and am not calling HP until tomorrow (never had good luck with late night tech support).

I'm thinking the video card or screen is shot. The laptop is under warranty still so that's not a problem, I just want to boot it up long enough to backup some data off the drive before I send it in.

Has anyone seen this problem before, or have any suggestions on what to try?

Heres what you need to do in order:

1.) Remove the battery and unplug the unit, so it has no power- then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds, after which plug it back in and put the battery back in and try to boot it up, if that doesn't work go to the next step:

2.) Boot it up without anything plugged into the usb, or any other ports, just the laptop itself, see if that makes any difference.

If you try these two steps and nothing happens then contact HP Support and have it repaired, if none of these two steps work then your motherboard may be shot.

Did you have the laptop plugged into a surgeprotector ?

Tried the battery removal and power button suggestion a few times with no luck.

Yes, it was plugged in to a surge protector.

Motherboards can go pretty easily all it takes is a single transistor to burn out and it renders your notebook useless.

Definitely contact HP and ask for a case manager it will save you an hour on the phone with their techs, as it sounds like theres not much else you can do.

Sorry, don't ask to, demand to but nicely it usually works better.

I wish you luck Matt, you from Vermont? or is that Virginia Tech? :p

    Virginia Tech!

Yeah I figured that was probably the case. I just need to get some stuff backed up off the drive, so I'll look online for one of those conversion kits for a SATA drive so I can access it via usb on my other computer. Does opening the laptop to get at the drive void the warranty? Or should I just go about it "don't ask don't tell".

No it doesn't void the warranty at all, it's if you replace the drive with another then the replacement drive isn't covered if it breaks, or possibly breaks your machine...gets alittle sketchy around then
    however.

Thats the best thing you can do, as it sounds like you know they will just reinstall everything on your hard drive when you send it in, good luck.

and welcome to the boards :)

I've had a dv6000ea hp pavilion laptop for about 6 months, too. Last two days ,sometimes, i get the same problem. The light turns on but the screen stays blank, also the fan stops and usb mouse ligths is off. this occurs after the hibernation or restart or new startup.

have any suggestions on what to do?
