My notebook gets very hot all the time. I never hear the fan turn on. I'd hate to just ship it back. What are some possible reasons and solutions here?

Make sure the fan isn't spinning. Locate in on the underside, and just be absolutely sure it isn't spinning. If not, then make sure nothing is obstructing it, and it you've had the notebook for a long time, clean any dust out of the cooling system. If it still doesn't spin, then its probably a faulty fan or the connector for it, may become loose. Both problems require a slight dissasembly of the notebook to resolve, and if your under warranty, its generally better to get HP to fix the problem.

What's your CPU temps. My DV6000Z fan remains off 95% of the time when it's undervolting/clocking. My fan turns on when one or more cores reaches about 60C.
