hi guys, its my first post here.
ok i'll try to be as concise as possible....
i have a dv6208nr with amd turion64 mk-36 1gig of ram and 100gig hdd, it was preloaded with vista home premium, all was welland loving it..altough im not liking vista that much i've used it for about a month. i also bought a 120gig hdd seperately as sort of an upgrade.... i did the upgrade and loaded it with winxp pro and made the quickplay direct to play also.... everything was smooth thanks to this forum for detailed instructions how to make the partition part and installation. i also upgraded my bios to the latest F.28 way back march without a problem... now heres the issues im having now...
1. when i was trying to increase the video ram in the BIOS, i noticed that my model number: was blank, before i can see dv6208nr there and my UUID/ serial number turned to a string of zero(000000000000000000000), annoyed.. i tried to go to hp support and tried the auto product detection... to my suprise, it said that i dont have an HP machine... obviously it is... does anyone knows how did it happened and any idea how can i have my serial/uuid back to bios?
2.fiddling more... i went to device manager, under 1394 net adapter #2, i have an exclamation point in it and says the device cannot start code 10, i tried uninstalling it rebooting etc etc but the yellow exclamation point is still there....
3. when i go to ipconfig/all my nvidia network adapter has a physical address of 00-00-00-00-00-00, is that normal? i can change the mac address through device manager though but im just annoyed why i have 00-00-00-00-00-00 as my mac address...
this is all under windows XP with bios f28, i havent tried swapping back the original hdd preloaded with vista since i am still out of town...the orig hdd was practically intact with the recovery partition still there...
other than the said issue... the laptop is useable.. using it while i type right now... i just am a bit confused why did these things happened, it was handled with care like my 3rdchild...
i bought the laptop at bestbuy online when i was still in the u.s. but now im in the philippines... can anyone have any idea how can i resolve the issue especially the one on the BIOS where all my serial number and UUID number turned to zeros?
i tried an online chat with HP, and concluded it was a hardware failure.. is that true? im using it right now... i am still playing nba live 07 on this and the go6150 is handling it quite well...
i havent tried using the nvidia lan since from day 1 i used the wifi already...
please help me... im a little puzzled why these things happened...
thanks alot..

guys is this an isolated issue? am i the only one having this dilema?
-
maybe this is the reason for the WHY question regarding my bios
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Now_Bios_phoenix_that_are_crippled_to_work_ONLY_with_Vista
the problem now is the HOW... -
I am having the exact same issue on my HP DV9000z laptop.
MAC address is 00:00:00:00:00:00 in all operating systems tried.
1394 Adapter shows up in windows with an exclamation point, same error.
Serial Number and UUID in BIOS are no longer existing. All zeros.
I must manually assign a MAC address to my adapter to obtain an IP address.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I tried reflashing my BIOS to the latest. I was previously running F.28. This had no effect.
Any ideas? -
Try flash back with something older, which was known to support only XP. Alternatively, if you have time, try running the recovery disks and see if everything works with the new HDD.
What type of HDD did you install (and what did u remove)? -
Unlike the original poster, I made no hardware changes. Nor did I make any change to the BIOS before the problems started occurring.
The BIOS flash I performed was an action to remedy the problem already in place, which had no effect. So I'm not sure reverting would have any effect either.
From the research I've done, I've seen that this has happened with a number of HP Laptops and Servers in the past, for which they've either issued a utility to reset the Serial in the BIOS (which regenerates the UUID), or recommended sending the laptop in for service (where they probably perform the same process). It seems that once the UUID is restored, the integrated NIC produces its MAC address again.
I'm going to open a ticket with HP Support to try to obtain a utility. -
Unless these problems are affecting the usage of your computer, then you're just looking for problems.

Other OS's, such as Linux, detect the network card as a new device every time I boot, hence filling the udev table slowly. -
I have the same proble whit my dv6353cl.
The HP Chat service sucks!
