im thinking about getting a dv6500, but in the UK the only graphics cards availiable are the Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and NVIDIA® GeForce™ 7150M. I've never had a laptop before so i wanted to know which of these two graphics are best, and how it compares against the GeForce 8400M.

Here's a link to the models (no customisation availiable on uk site :( )

I am also thinking of getting a dv6500 from the UK. The problem I have with going with the dedicated graphics is that you end up with an AMD processor.

So instead of answering your question I am going to tag on another one (sorry!).

Which is the better option, an Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 with an Intel GMA X3100 video option. Or a AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 with a dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce 7150M)?

It is really frustrating that we can't customise out laptops in the UK.

The 7150M and the X3100 are both integrated graphics cards. They do not have any dedicated memory of their own. performance wise they will be pretty simialr and if you want to game at good resolution steer away from either of those cards. The 8400M will be much much better even though it is still not the best option.

The former will be better option. But dont expect either of those systems to be gaming machines. For general everyday use either laptop will do fine.

I've got the X3100 with the Intel processor, and I've put Tribes2, UT2K4, and Halo on it, runs great. The thing is, I don't really game on it that much. I've found I'm more comfortable on a desktop. People have this idea they're going to game on a laptop. I use it mostly for surfing the web.
The X3100 is great for everyday use, and if you get the 12 cell battery, it can go for 5 hours. Get the 12 cell even if it adds some weight. Acts as a nice carrying handle.

Agreed. Unfortunately, HP has a bad habit of pairing AMD processors with truly lame GPUs (instead of the merely lame GPUs HP pairs the Intel processors with).
