I bought a dv6500 about 17 months ago and through all of the wear and tear it appears the AC adaptor is not getting a good connection to the laptop. I have to pull the cord in one direction or another to get the laptop to recognize it's plugged in.

From my understanding, HP will tell me I need a new motherboard most likely. Any idea of the cost? Any other solutions?

    Thanks,
    Chris

Such a repair would be like replacing the entire engine in a car instead of just changing the oil.

The best solution really is to do it yourself; with some simple soldering, you can secure the AC jack to the motherboard and fix the problem. The tricky part is that taking apart a laptop computer can be daunting. ;)

IIRC, HP has put the power plug on a small, easily replaceable board. Check the service manual and http://partsurfer.hp.com.

Yes HP will charge you excessively for this type of repair.

As brianstretch said, there is a board with a power connector which you can replace yourself.

First, thank you both for the response and I apologize for how long it's taken me to get back to this issue.

If I may follow up, it appears this isn't that hard to do - i.e. I don't need to solder anything. Is that correct?

I think this is the part... does it appear to be correct for a dv6500t?

Thanks agan and my apologies again for the delay,
    Chris

    Thats fine.

Yes you do not need to solder anything. You just need to replace the board in the photo i attached above.

Should take about 15-20mins to do. There is a video guide on how to do it, you can also refer to your service manuals for photos.

Great - I'll order up the part. It appears to be 446524-001 as that has the USB and power connector on it.

OK, the part is here and I'm taking apart the machine according to the service manual. I'm stuck on trying to figure out how to release a ZIF connector cable.... any advice?

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Be very careful,

For which part is the ZIF connector? The keyboard?

There should be a bar than you push down to unlock the cable.

I suggest you watch the video guide and read the service manual.

Btw theres also a LIF connector (low insertion force) which doesnt have a locking bar. You just pull it out gently and gently wedge it back in to put it back.

OK Thanks. I managed to get it replaced. It look way longer than 15 minutes and I managed to forget a screw, but it looks like it fixed the problem and the machine still works. :)

Thanks for all of your help!
