So I just got a brand new HP dv6500t and I've already removed all the bloatware, removed a bunch of processes, and knocked off quite a few statup programs but yet it takes about 2.5 to 3 minutes to boot. I love the machine but it boots slow and I hate the amount of ram vista and all its processes require.

I downloaded a program called tuneup utilities 2007, it fixed up a lot of registry issues after I removed all of the HP crap. It significantly reduced the boot up time. They have a free 30-day trial available.

Try installing Windows Vista all by itself without all the bloatware. This will definitely decrease the time it takes for your notebook to boot. Click here for more information.

At what stage exactly is the machine being slow? Is it waiting for the log-on screen, or after you enter the password and waiting for the desktop, or is it waiting for startup programs to load, etc. Slow booting at each of those stages could mean a different thing.

As SBR said, there are a very wide variety of points that can make your boot up slow. If you could be more specific at what points it is so slow maybe we can be more accurate to suggest a solution to reduce your boot up time. Your system specs also might help (Go to User CP, then Edit Signature on the left side).

It hangs on a black screen before login and hangs on another black screen right after login. The pre login hang is about 70 seconds and the post login hang is about 120 seconds.

yeah i think you should just do a fresh install of vista so that you know for sure that all the bloatware and the registry is clean. in my opinion its better to do a fresh install rather than having to install third party software to do that work, be cause at least you know that its really a clean os. but you could go the quick way with windows defender and go to tools>software explorer and disable the programs that you dont want to start up on "startup"

Hey, I went through the same problems as you and decided to do a fresh install. It really wasnt that bad at all, and if you're worried about getting all of the right drivers installed, don't. Windows will take care of most of that for you. The only ones I did myself were quickplay and realtek HD audio. Also, it will significantly reduce your boot time, and make your computer run way faster, because you don't have all of hp's crap on it. Now, I also disabled a lot of services and a lot of other microsoft crap. I did all the disabling using a tweakhounds guide: http://www.tweakhound.com/vista/tweakguide/index.htm
The other thing you should watch out for is your anti-virus and firewall programs. They will gobble up tons of memory. Go with fw and av software that is less consuming. I use zone alarm free firewall and nod32, and they leave a much smaller memory footprint than mcafee. Oh, and one more thing, make sure to make your recovery discs. You can also opt to remove your recovery partition if you do so, which will buy you and extra 10gb on your hardrive. Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I already made system recovery disks, but whats my best route for a clean install? Just put in the system recovery disks?

No! Don't do that, you will just reload all of that crapware that you were trying to get rid of in the first place. Follow the guide atr90 posted, it's very good, I used it myself and was succesfull.

yes dont do that. correct me if im wrong but doesn't hp include the "vista any time upgrade dvd" with all vista based notebooks? just put that in and use the key under your notebook, then go to hp.com and download/install the drivers. never use the system recovery unless you really have to, because they will install all the bloatware too
