WHY does it have so much static? and also, when I plugin my mic in the front, it doesn't switch to that headset mic. WHY?

I hated the integrated mic. It made everything sound like I was under water. It had a lot of static noise, etc.

Don't know about your model but with some models depending on if you are using jacks or USB type connection, you need to right click on the white speaker icon in the system tray and disable the speaker for the headset to be enable and then enable the speakers again when you're finished using the headset in playback devices.

If I do that, my headset can't hear either. I am using jacks, and I am using a Sennheiser pc140.

It's a cheap one, that's why. You should ajust the level of MIC volume to reduce noise.
You may try remove sound device, reboot, then let windows detects and installs driver.

The front MIC doesn't work, probably from bad audio board. You should send for service.

I have the Conexant HD SmartAudio 221 sound card. In Vista it works decently, and I don't have to go in front of it thanks to the drivers HP originally provided. I have downgraded to XP and since this sound card is made for Vista only, I had to find some audio drivers for it from the HP Forums - and I now have to lean closer to my microphone so it can actually hear stuff. There is a control panel that allows you to change some noise reduction and stuff. It might be the problem with the audio driver that might cause static or low volume input. Anyway, I think you have the Realtek High Definition Audio sound card so I don't know. :)

I have realtek HD audio chip and microphone is pretty decent. Realtek driver makes it easy to do some noise cancellation adjustments. OP, try installing teh latest driver from Realtek website.

Try these troubleshoot steps from HP
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...t=3369405&rule=5576&lang=en&docname=c01172503

If problem persists, you should send it for service, mostly by the faulty audio board, or something else. Who knows as HP sells too many lemons on the market with known issues.

This problem also can be fixed by BIOS update. I saw one before, the front MIC had worked, but after changing motherboard, it quited working; however, after the bios update, it worked again. This was my real experience from a DV9000, and it's not a guess.

Hey, thanks for the reply. That link to the troubleshooting page was useless. Sorry if that sounded mean. However, the bios suggestion sounded very plausible. I am going to test it as soon as I do my clean install. Until then, does anyone else have any ideas why it doesn't switch to my headset mic when I plug in my headset mic into the jack? This has happened to my laptop to previous motherboard too.
