dv6575us listed with gigaethernet in specs but mine don't have it

I just want to confirm with you people. I have the DV6575us. I purchased it from CompUSA and they have it listed with a gigabit ethernet NIC on the specs. Check at Amazon to compare and it is listed with gigabit ethernet as well. Check at HP.com and it is listed with gigabit ethernet card.

Well, I check the NIC that came with my unit and it is a Realtek RTL8101 Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0). Check on Realtek web site and the specs for the NIC says 10/100 fast ethernet but not gigabit ethernet.

Went to:
control panel
network and sharing center
manage network connections
right click on local area connection
properties
configure
advanced
speed & duplex

The 1000 full duplex option is not available and HP tech support keeps telling me that the NIC is gigabit ethernet but that the drivers for gigabit are not available yet. I told them that that is like saying, for example, that they are advertising a computer with a 1024x768 resolution, you buy it and when you start using it you are told to use it at 800x600 because drivers are not available.

Anyway I don't think it is a driver problem, the NIC is fast ethernet and not gigabit ethernet according to what Realtek says in their web site:

and that's what I need to confirm with you. Does anybody have the same issue? What NIC came with the dv6500t? I know that mine is dv6575us but the only difference is supposed to be the slow 4200 RPM HD in the 6575.

I'm somehow pleased I wasn't the only one crazy man that thought to be fooled by HP for owning a laptop capable of gigabit networking on the paper but having only a fast ethernet chip.

I can confirm the chip is of Realtek RT81xx family which is only fast ethernet by design (although this chip is pin compatible with newer gigabit ones) and also can confirm the computer does not work at gigabit speed (it does not either negotiate a gigabit connection with another tested gigabit port).

Also linux Ubuntu ethtool tool showed capability for fast ethernet 10/100 only.

I'm getting very angry with this because a company like HP cannot advertise something different from what it sells!! I'm feeling fooled...

edilcs, have you taken any action with HP concerning this issue?

My HP Pavilion 6670 also shows 1Gbps in Vista task manager when not connected where as in Windows XP it shows 100Mbps, i guess its the difference in the driver versions......actually i never connected my Laptop with the network higher than 100Mbps ports.....

 

I had similar problems with a dv6700t...hp advertised a gigabit ethernet and I even have a copy of their ad from their website. Salesperson even told me it had gigabit. Used the wireless for a few months then got a gigabit network and NAS and when trying network card realized it wasn't gigabit. Tech support had no clue what hardware I should have had in there after many many calls to them. Then after hours on the phone with hp I got my laptop replaced. They acknolwedged they have no clue what hardware I should have had. HP CONSTANTLY FALSY ADVERTISES HARDWARE! They have no clue what is really in there and for the most part, neither does their tech support. Can't believe there hasn't been a class action suit by now...will NEVER buy from hp again!
