    • , Level 2 cache 512 KB + 512 KB, Up to 1600 MHz system bus running at AC/DC mode 35 Watt

I have only posted processor spec as this is my main concern although the AMD comes with a bigger hard drive.
my main concern is which is the better machine to go for ; i know it is not a very high spec but only want to spend £500 and like the HP machines.

    all advice welcome!!!

    Welcome to the forum,

What kinds of tasks are you going to do with the notebook? Also fill out the FAQ so that we can help you better. Any modern processor(AMD or intel) will be sufficient so is there any other difference between the two notebooks beside processor and HDD?

    FAQ
    1) What is your budget? £500

    2) What size notebook would you prefer? Mainstream 15" - 16" screen

    4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? HP

    5) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? Microsoft office tasks mainly word /excel/ powerpoint and internet use.

    6) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? its for a lady and she may need to carry around but not that often.

    7) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? No

    8) How many hours of battery life do you need? not really an issue!

    9) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? no i don't mind.

    10) What OS do you prefer? Windows (XP or Vista), Mac OS, Linux, etc.?Vista

    14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? yes

    15) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? buying now and need it to last quite a few years as not technology chaser.

    Notebook Components

    16) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 500GB? over 100GB

    17) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive? DVD burner

i think my main concern is the speed of the laptop and which one is the better buy. I have seen a few post about over heating with the AMD chip and shorter battery life. is this true or when buying intel chip you are buying the name rather than a better more reliable processor.

Go with the intel, its worth the money

If you dont have the money to spare, just go with AMD. They will both perform about the same with office tasks.

    are the two processors comparable.
    Intel® Centrino® processor technology
    • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T5450

    AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60

if they are then I will probably go for the intel.

Go with Intel, has better performance and produces less heat. I've found that AMD cores produce more heat and thats no good for a laptop.

But it all depends on your pocket, try to look at benchmarks, compare the performance of the Intel vs AMD, I don't know but in Wprime both score almost the same. (Although is not a real world performance benchmark can help).

    Gool luck with your choice.
