I just bought a dv6t-3000 and have since realized no matter what I do - work or keep it idle - the fan always keeps running. I even disabled "fan always on" setting in the bios but it didnt help. The fan is still constantly on. Called HP support and the rep mentioned its how its supposed to be - which IMHO is not correct. My old (now stolen) toshiba was as quiet as a laptop could be. Even my 7 year old Dell only turns on the fan when it becomes hot. Cutting the story short, is there a way I can set the fan to be on only when needed. SpeedFan shows the cores' temperature to be ~20C, so core running hot isnt an issue. Bios on this system is F.12

any pointer is really appreciated. I dont want to return this laptop but if I cant resolve this issue, I'd have to.

    Hi Truefun:

I have a DVT6SE. While the ATI5650 graphics card is in use (plugged in), the fan runs at a higher speed and is audible. It's not agregious but noticeable for sure. While using the Intel HD graphics card, the fan spins at a lower rate and is nearly in-audible.

Wish the darn thing would be as quiet as a MBP.

    Thanks for sharing...

the funny part is that HP knows their laptops suffer from this issue which made them put this option in BIOS but their QA apparently didn't check it. The cust. reps refuse to acknowledge the problem altogether. I wonder if any hack is possible.

There is no reason for the fan to be on when core usage is like 2% and has been so for a while!

Many, if not all laptops with fans have that option. Really, I don't see why a computer wouldn't have that option.

Having an option is one thing and having a working option is another. In dv6t's case, the option just doesn't work.

Setting the power settings to "HP recommended" helped a bit in the sense that the fan in not ON all the time, though it does turn on intermittently for no apparent reason and shuts off within 5sec or so. The hard drive noise now seems to be a little louder than other laptops and dont know if there's a solution to that.
