OK first of all this issue only appeared today for me (I've had the machine since June), I think it might be caused by a new version of xsplit that I just updated yesterday - after you've read this, please tell me if it's possible that's what caused the problem, although I uninstalled it to no effect.

Anyway the problem is that only the first sound-using application I launch will output its sound through the headphones I have plugged into the jack (either jack, makes no difference which). all other programs put their sound out through the speakers.

I have my sound settings as such:

I tried right-clicking the "communications headphones" and setting them as the default device, but that had no effect (I can set the 'speakers and headphones' as default communications device, but that makes no difference on the output).

I tried reinstalling the audio drivers from Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv6t-6100 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) but that didn't fix it either.

does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? when I warranty the fan (it's grinding) should I ask them to replace some sort of hardware that would help with this?

Disable the communication headphones, it should work fine after that. I had the same problem.
