I just purchased a dv6tqe and it is coming with 6GB of ram. I believe that this is a 4GB and 2GB modules. I'd like to upgrade it to 8GB and was thinking maybe I could get another 4GB stick to replace the 2GB. I'd like to be consistent and have the same brand in there.

Does anyone know what brand ram these usually ship with? And the specs? Specifically the 4GB module.

I'm also thinking it might be easier to just get a new matching pair.

    Very much appreciated.

    G.Skill 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) notebook RAM upgrade for $49.99 shipped

You won't find a better deal on a RAM upgrade. G.Skill RAM is high quality, and the company stands behind its products. I had an old stick of DDR2 that I bought at least 4 years ago. It failed last year, and G.Skill replaced it, no questions asked.

I've heard it may be possible that the RAM on the HP is soldered and thus not fully replaceable

By the way why are you upgrading? 6 GB is already more than you need, are you upgrading for a reason or just to have 8 GB of RAM half of which will sit unused?

I've yet to hear of a fullsize laptop that had soldered ram. Pretty sure it has two swappable SO-DIMM slots.

Whoever you heard that from is an idiot. I replaced the RAM in my wife's old HP dv6100, and you can do the same with this much newer machine.

Thanks. I saw that deal this morning. Ended up just buying that after I saw how much a single 4GB stick cost anyway. You can't go wrong.

I pretty much only buy G.Skill now as well. Always been very happy with it.

I might snipe that deal and replace mine right out of the box and sell the stock DIMMs to some rube on ebay :D
