From your previous post, I see that your dv6z has the Turion II P540. This should share the same socket as the dual & quad mobile Phenom II's. So, an upgrade should be possible. The cpu's are socketed & HP has service manuals online for disassembly instructions. The only issue that I can see is the bios support for the quad cores considering that those were only offered in the dv6zse. Unless someone has already done such an upgrade & confirm thats a risk you might have to take.

    yep, I have the AMD Phenom(TM) II Dual-Core Mobile Processor P650 (2.6GHz, 2MB L2 Cache).

do u think i could upgrade it to this? this is from upgrades on hp site for the dv6z.
    AMD Phenom(TM) II Quad-Core Mobile Processor N970 (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 Cache)

I don't understand about the bios, but don't u think the bios will be supported if the hp dv6z cpu's AMD Phenom(TM) II Quad-Core Mobile Processor N970 (2.2GHz, 2MB L2 Cache) as one of the possible pre order upgrades? And I have looked for someone else that tried to upgrade but so far none. most people get the quad when pre ordered.

The BIOS should support it fine but one thing to note is that the the N970 has a 35 watt TDP while the P650 is only 25 watt. That could cause heat problems.

    AFAIK P650 has 2.8Ghz 25w.

What are your temps with the chip? Seems a awesome chip for in the efficiency side. Should be even better with some undervolt.

That's freezing temps por a portable chip xD.

If you want to play things like GTAIV o BC2 a quad makes sense, if not their low frequency vs the X2 will decrease performance in non multicore games.

The only reason I mentioned the bios was for the fact that the dvzse was the one with the quad cores while the regular dv6z was sold with dual cores (someone correct me if I'm wrong). In any case looks like the bios shouldnt be an issue.

As far as the cpu availability goes. Its unfortunate but there arent any boxed version of the current mobile cpu's unlike what Intel sells. So, your options are limited. There are a few dual core mobile Phenoms on ebay...maybe try contacting the seller to see if they can get you the quads. Otherwise, some of the barebones resellers might have them in stock.

I think that is true but I don't think that there was any internal differences between the two, just the external appereance and extras (bluray, fingerprint reader, touchscreen).

No, you cant just use any cpu, its got to be AMD & socket S1g4. No other cpu is going to work. Barebone resellers are the smaller boutique laptop sellers who might have the mobile phenoms since they can get OEM supply from AMD's distributors. Its not a gurantee that they can get you what you are looking for but its worth a try asking. Check out the Sager forums, there is a sticky with a big list of resellers. HP probably can sell you one though via their parts store but you are going to pay a high price for the upgrade.

I swapped my gateway from AMD N830 to AMD X920 and have no problems with heat. runs very cool compared to my core i5 actually. Battery life sucks but i have my power options set to performance 100% of the time.

Does your DV6Z have ati 5650? if so can you run 3dmark06 and tell me what it scores? your dual core will play most games better then a quad core. most games are not quad core optimzied with exception of GTA IV / BF Bad company 2.

My CPU arrived yesterday via Borderlinx and it runs perfectly in a DV6-3050sg (german version).

The 3DMark2006 jumped from 8300 to 9075 Points (with overclocked 5650), I got a CPU score of 3043.

Windows Experience Index (CPU) went up from 6.3 to 6.9.

    Great value for 90 Dollars...

When the GPU was overclocked to 715/1040 the DV6 became rather hot, temperatures went up to 85°C for the CPU and 89°C for the GPU. Then I used K10Stat for downvolting the CPU, it now runs with 0,9875 [email protected] and @800Mhz with 0.70 volt. The temperatures went down to 79°C and 82°C. I also replaced the heatpad on the CPU/GPU-cooler with thermal paste.
With no GPU-overclocking the fan stays rather silent and there are no heat issues.
Battery life is about the same I had with the Phenom [email protected].
