So...just got a new dv7-6b00 CTO and one thing I've noticed is that when I have the headphones in and have no music playing I can hear a quiet "static" sound in the background...is this a known thing? Any way to get rid of it?

If not, that's disappointing since neither my Mac nor Toshiba does this...

I also notice a "squeak" sound when the sound is muted or any time I double click on a song in iTunes...

I have read that taking the batetry out and putting again may correct the click sound.

And what about the "static" sound?

I just want to know if anyone else experiences this. If not, then obviously there's something wrong with my specific computer. But if this common across all HP dv6/7-6xxx series (which I suspect it is) then...

I have no hiss but i do have the squeak sound occasionally. If it bothers you so much get a set of decent headphones and a DAC.

Yup had this problem, i downloaded the IDT Audio Driver from hp.com and it went away. I still hear a staticky squeak right when i plug-in my headphones but only w/ the cheap ones, no problems when i use my sennheisers with the gold plated plug. Hope this helps

I have some pretty sensitive cans which really make the noise floor noticeable ony my ENVY. When there is a load on the GPU I can even hear hash from the power supplies. Poor engineering I guess.

Nevermind, I found it, installed it, no change.

I am going to return this laptop. And I did try it with better headphones, professional-grade ones, it actually made the problem MORE noticeable.

Oh well, better luck next time.

Hmm... You should have just gotten a DAC. That would have made the sound MUCH better. (On any computer)
