    Hello fellow dv7 owners,

A couple of weeks ago a fan in my dv7 started making a noise which is different than its usual silent operation noise. I figured it was nothing to worry about, because I can deal with it.

This morning when I turned my computer on it gave me a message. The message indicated that the computer has detected a malfunction with a cooling fan (not specific which fan) and that the computer was shutting down in 15 seconds.

The noise is coming from the back left side of the computer (situated as if you were using it) and its more of a louder whirring sound than usual.

Has anyone seen this before? Can I fix it myself? It may be just a loose bolt or something, right?

My issue with shipping it back to HP is that I live overseas (military) and have an APO address. I would have to send it to a relative, and have them ship it to HP, etc etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could get a new fan and replace it yourself if you know what your doing but if you don't send it back to HP.

Alternatively you could shoot it ;)

    Hi Husky15,

Were you able to repair the fan? If not I work for HP and understand you are in the military. If you need any assistance regarding this issue please email me your product and contact information to [email protected]. Please include in the subject line Attn: Veronica-NBR.

Hi, I have a dv6 with the same problem. I am still under warranty but am concerned about shipping my machine back. I found the product number for the fan, and there is a reseller from china on ebay, but unfortunately it was about $70 + 2 -4 weeks shipping time. Does anyone have experience w/ HP warranty labor? Specifically, will they wipe my system? I can't have them re-formatting everything right now, and I don't have a spare drive to back up to...

order it from here HP Parts Store - HP Computer Parts - HP Printer Parts - Compaq Parts , not ebay

if you're under warranty, HP will offer to repair it for free

same thing happened to me (fan making faint clicking noise sometimes and the message popped up for me) but I ordered the replacement fan/heatsink assembly and am going to install it this weekend

I used the HP Warranty to fix this problem and it took basically 10 days from the day my computer was gone to the day i got it back.
